BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Chase Edwards' 10th-inning home run in the opener and a four-run, second-inning outburst propelled No. 23-ranked University of Mount Olive to a doubleheader sweep of Conference Carolinas baseball foe King (Tenn.) College on Sunday afternoon.

Edwards' blast capped a 7-3 win.

DeAndre Allen and Zak Orrison connected on timely back-to-back doubles early during the second game, an 11-2 victory.

Tied at 3-3 through nine innings, Jay Gonzalez started the UMO 10th with lead-off walk and Cody Britt was hit by a pitch. Bradon Reitano drew a walk, which loaded the bases for Luke Barry.

Barry hit a comebacker to the mound that scored Gonzalez. Edwards followed with his shot over the center-field wall.

UMO hurler Zach Bernard notched his first decision of the season with one-plus innings of one-hit, two-strikeout relief.

In game two, the Trojans (23-11 overall, 9-2 CC) manufactured four runs in the second inning and three in the third. Gonzalez, Britt, Justin Manning, Orrison, Allen and Edwards each had key hits during that stretch.

Derek Justice (5-1) threw his third complete game of the season. The senior allowed four hits and retired eight Tornado batters on strikeouts.

The teams conclude their three-game series today.

Softball

CHARLOTTE -- Beth Overman matched a single-game school record for runs scored and hit the eventual game-winning home run during the University of Mount Olive's 13-12 victory over Queens University in a game two of a non-conference softball twinbill Sunday afternoon.

Overman scored four runs in a game for the first time since Kelly Minshew accomplished the feat in 2011. Teammate Caitlin Ewers belted her first-ever collegiate grand slam home run, which sparked a seven-run, third-inning uprising.

Lauren Smith earned the win inside the pitcher's circle, while Carly White logged the saved.

The Royals won the opener, 13-4.

Mount Olive (13-21 overall, 1-3 CC) is the guest of Limestone today.

Men's lacrosse

GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Matt Shields provided a hat trick during the University of Mount Olive's 14-6 loss to No. 3-ranked Limestone (S.C.) on the Conference Carolinas men's lacrosse scene Sunday afternoon.

Shields scored UMO's first goal barely three minutes into the game.

The Saints, the Division II national runners-up in 2013, seized command with a four-goal outburst. Shields scored again in the second period, but Limestone built a comfortable 9-2 margin at halftime.

Shields, Cameron Walsh and Stephen Bowlan accounted for the Trojans' second-half scoring. UMO keeper Ross Bowman recorded 11 saves.

Mount Olive (9-2 overall, 1-1 CC) travels to No. 7-ranked Pfeiffer University on Wednesday.
