Shields brothers combine for six goals in UMO lacrosse win

MOUNT OLIVE -- Matt and Dan Shields each scored a hat trick as the University of Mount Olive launched its 2014 Conference Carolinas men's lacrosse campaign with a 19-4 rout of in-state foe Lees-McRae on Saturday afternoon.

Overall, 15 players scored for the Trojans, who continued their school-record start (8-1 overall) in just their second year of existence. Brett Kingston dished out four assists and Jesse Mitchell provided three assists.

Mount Olive received goals from six different players as it built an 8-0 lead just 11/2 periods into the match. The Bobcats stopped the run on Kyle Judge's goal, but that proved to be their lone score during a 46-minute stretch of play.

The Trojans collected two man-up goals in the final three minutes of the second period, and held a comfortable 11-1 advantage at intermission.

UMO keepers Ross Bowman and Dorian Gabrek combined for nine saves between the pipes.

Men's tennis

GAFFNEY, S.C. -- The University of Mount Olive remained perfect in five Conference Carolinas matches this season with a 9-0 shutout of in-state foe Lees-McRae on Saturday morning.

The tandems of Edgar Bub-Rik Wolthuis, Matt Finnerty-Henric Falkenberg and Matheus Ribiero-Paul Wiederspahn completed a sweep in doubles play.

Mount Olive (12-1 overall) completed the shutout with six straight-set wins in singles.

A day earlier, the twosomes of Bub-Wolthuis, Finnerty-Falkenberg and Stanley Roffe-Widerspahn gave the Trojans a 3-0 lead heading into singles play against Limestone.

Bub and Finnerty secured the overall win with straight-set decisions at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively. The duo combined to lose just six games for Mount Olive, which remained unbeaten in four conference outings this season.

Falkenburg capped the Trojans' three-point triumph with a straight-set triumph at No. 3 singles.

Women's lacrosse

BELMONT -- Katie McGovern notched a natural hat trick during the final eight minutes of the opening half, leading the University of Mount Olive past in-state Conference Carolinas foe Belmont Abbey, 11-8, on Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans extended their win streak to three matches.

McGovern scored in the 21st, 25th and 29th minutes as Mount Olive built a 7-0 lead at intermission. The Crusaders pulled to within 8-3 midway through the second half before McGovern registered her fourth goal of the match.

Riann Daziel posted two goals and one assist. Candace Corkin contributed two goals.

UMO improved to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in league play this season.

Men's volleyball

BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Angel Dache scored the final two points in the third set and the University of Mount Olive turned back King (Tenn.) 25-23, 25-22, 27-25 in a pivotal Conference Carolinas match Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans (12-10 overall, 9-3 CC) prevailed for the fifth time in their last six outings. Steven Cruse and Renzo Rossato provided seven and six kills, respectively, in the straight-set affair.

Quaid Marin handed out 41 assists. Keaton Marin paced the defense with a match-high 16 digs.

Dache recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs during the Trojans' 23-25, 25-15, 25-23, 16-25, 15-12 triumph at Lees-McRae on Friday evening.

Garret Dimm and Rossato contributed nine and six kills, respectively. The Trojans hit .191 as a team.

Quaid Marin passed out 35 assists among seven hitters.

Mount Olive entertains Belmont Abbey next Saturday at 2 p.m.

Softball

MOUNT OLIVE -- University of Mount Olive hurler Madison Johnston set a single-game school record for most innings pitched during a 12-inning, 3-2 victory over North Greenville on Friday afternoon.

The Crusaders took the nightcap, 3-1.

Johnston retired the first 10 batters she faced and threw 131 total pitches, including 87 strikes. Meanwhile, North Greenville's Rachel Glazebrook threw 193 pitches in a complete-game effort.

Jennifer Jones made two game-saving plays in the top of the seventh inning for UMO. The teams remain deadlocked at 2-all until the 12th when Beth Overman connected on the game-winning single to center field against a drawn-in Crusader defense.

The teams combined to leave 26 runners on base.

In game two, North Greenville collected three fourth-inning runs off of two UMO errors and Sarah Armstrong's RBI single.

The Trojans (10-20 overall, 1-3 CC) avoided the shutout on Overman's RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Mount Olive entertains in-state foe Chowan University on Wednesday. The doubleheader begins at 4 p.m.

Baseball

MOUNT OLIVE -- Erskine pitcher Austin Gambrell limited No. 30-ranked University of Mount Olive to one hit through seven innings, and the No. 23-ranked Flying Fleet escaped with a 2-1 win at Scarborough Field on Friday evening.

The teams completed their three-game, Conference Carolinas series Saturday afternoon.

Gambrell struck out five and walked two. Wes Schuler earned the save with two innings of one-hit, two-strikeout relief. The Trojans scored their lone run against Schuler.

Jay Gonzalez and Bretton Gouthro each had one hit for Mount Olive.

Freshman Kodi Whitley took the mound loss. He permitted two earned runs on eight hits and fanned four Erskine batters in a seven-inning stint. Brody McDonald provided two innings of two-strikeout scoreless relief.

Osborne Award

HIGH POINT -- University of Mount Olive senior Brahm Moolman is one of 10 finalists selected for the prestigious Murphy Osborne Award -- the highest academic honor bestowed upon a student-athlete in Conference Carolinas.

Moolman, who hails from South Africa, helped lead Mount Olive to the 2012 Conference Carolinas tournament championship and an appearance in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional.

Nominees must have a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.25 and must have been a full-time student for at least two years at a conference school.

The winner will be announced March 28.

Hawn Cup

HIGH POINT -- The University of Mount Olive has emerged as the overall Joby Hawn Cup leader after the winter sports season in Conference Carolinas play.

The Trojans holds top spot with 68 points and an .829 rating after sweeping the men's and women's indoor track and field championship crowns. UMO is also No. 1 in the men's Cup standings with 30.5 points and an .879 rating.

On the women's side, the Trojans are third (37.5 points) behind Cup leader Belmont Abbey and King (Tenn.).

The Hawn Cup is tallied after each sport season and awarded in honor of former Commissioner H.C. "Joby" Hawn for his many years of service to the now-defunct Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference.

Points are awarded in each sport based on the order of regular-season finish with bonus points going to the tournament champion (two bonus points) and runner-up finisher (one bonus point) based on the number of participating teams in each sport.
