PIKEVILLE -- Freshman Ashton McGee slugged a lead-off, walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, and Charles B. Aycock turned back New Bern, 1-0, in the Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference opener for both teams Tuesday afternoon.

"We felt fortunate to win," CBA head coach Charles Davis said.

Indeed.

The Golden Falcons (3-1 overall) left the bases loaded with one out in the sixth inning, and stranded three runners aboard in the eighth with no outs.

McGee ended the drought with his second hit of the afternoon. Garrett Joyner provided three hits. Noah West and Logan Brown contributed one hit apiece.

Bobby Hampton and Tim Naughton combined for the shutout. Hampton fanned eight New Bern batters and permitted six hits in 52/3 innings of work. Naughton provided 31/3 innings of one-hit, five-strikeout relief and improved to 2-0 on the bump.

"The kids, when they didn't score, they could have gotten down, but they didn't," Davis said. "A conference win, of course. All of these games I'm sure are going to be like this."

Aycock entertains Northern Nash on Thursday and is the guest of county rival Southern Wayne on Friday.
