GAFFNEY, S.C. -- No. 15-ranked University of Mount Olive launched defense of its Conference Carolinas regular-season title with a doubleheader sweep of Limestone (S.C.) on Sunday afternoon.
The Trojans prevailed 15-11 and 7-4 on the Founders FCU Stadium diamond. The teams concluded the three-game series today.
UMO catcher Justin Manning batted 6 for 7 with a double and three RBI during the twinbill. Chase Edwards contributed four hits and an RBI, while Rob Shipman and Bradon Reitano each swatted back-to-back home runs in the nightcap.
Shipman, a junior first baseman, led the defense with 18 putouts.
Senior southpaw Josh Frederick claimed the mound win in the opener. The Eastern Wayne alum yielded four earned runs on five hits, struck out one and walked one in 31/3 innings.
It was Frederick's first win of the season.
Gunner Kines started and Zach Bernard cleaned up for his second save of the season. Bernard gave up two earned runs on three hits and fanned one Limestone batter in 22/3 innings.
Freshman Kodi Whitley hurled a complete game in the nightcap. He permitted four runs (three earned) on six hits and logged six strikeouts for his second win of the season.
The Trojans (14-7 overall, 2-0 CC) cranked out 27 hits on the day and scored runs in eight of 16 innings.
