MOUNT OLIVE -- University of Mount Olive junior Gunner Kines has been named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Southeast Region pitcher-of-the-week.

Kines struck out 10, walked none and threw a complete-game shutout against Florida Southern. He retired the first seven Moccasins he faced and induced ground-ball double plays in the fourth and ninth innings.

FSU managed just four hits.

Kines (4-1) lowered his earned run average (ERA) to 2.15. He currently leads Conference Carolinas pitchers in wins and has the league's third-lowest ERA.

Mount Olive (12-7 overall) launches defense of its Conference Carolinas regular-season championship today at Limestone (S.C.). The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at noon.

A single game is scheduled for Monday.

Women's basketball

MOUNT OLIVE -- Four University of Mount Olive women's basketball players -- Leah Graham, Katie Paschal, Annarose Schoonmaker and Ty Wallace -- each earned a spot on the 2013-14 Conference Carolinas All-Academic team.

The award recognizes juniors and seniors with a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade-point average.

Graham is a junior and majors in criminal justice.

Paschal, who hails from Williamston, is a health and physical education. The East Carolina transfer is eligible for the Conference Carolinas women's basketball scholar athlete-of-the-year accolades.

A senior from Clinton, Schoonmaker is a criminology/criminal justice major. She played on the Trojans' JV team.

Wallace, from New Bern, is a psychology major. She ranked second on the team in rebounds and double-doubles.

Women's lacrosse

ST. LEO, Fla. -- Sophomore Riann Daziel posted a natural hat trick (three straight goals) within the first 10-plus minutes, but the University of Mount Olive couldn't maintain its momentum in a 10-6, non-conference loss to St. Leo University on Saturday afternoon.

Daziel notched the game's first goal within 29 seconds. She added goals in the 4th and 20th minutes.

Candace Corkin and Michelle Scannell collected back-to-back goals within two minutes of each other to give the Trojan women a 5-4 lead at halftime.

St. Leo answered with a back-breaking, six-goal run.

Alysha Kulka's late second-half goal ended UMO's 30-minute scoring drought.

The Trojan women (4-2 overall) finished with 20 shots on goal. UMO goalie Hannah Knight recorded nine saves between the pipes.
