SAVANNAH, Ga. -- No. 18-ranked University of Mount Olive finished 13th overall during the Armstrong Pirate Men's Golf Invitational, which had eight top-25 teams participate in the 54-hole event.
The Trojans shot 299 in the second round and 923 total over the two-day event. The teams played 36 holes on Monday.
UMO's Jesus Valderrama shared 34th place individually with a 225 and his 2-under 70 tied for the 10th-lowest score in the second round. Mark O'Hara posted a 1-under 71 in the third round, and concluded play tied for 38th at 228.
Sebastian Andersen (229) tied for 41st. Jeffred Villalobos fired a 245 and wound up among a pack of competitors in 81st place. Dalton Gore (246) finished 85th.
The Trojans return to action March 17 at the Barton College Intercollegiate.
Men's tennis
HIGH POINT -- The University of Mount Olive's Matt Finnerty has been selected the Conference Carolinas men's tennis player-of-the-week.
Finnerty posted a 6-0 record, 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles, during the Trojans' three victories last week. He won all three singles matches in straight-set fashion, and combined with doubles partner Henric Falkenberg to lose just seven games in triumphs over Erskine, King (Tenn.) and Chowan University.
Mount Olive, ranked No. 7 in the latest Division II Southeast Region poll, is 8-1 overall and 2-0 against Conference Carolinas opposition this season.
Indoor track
MOUNT OLIVE -- The University of Mount's Dylan Lafond and Chelsea van Dijk have been named the Division II men's and women's track and field national athletes-of-the-week by USFTCCA.
Lafond claimed the 3,000-meter and one-mile run titles during the season-ending Conference Carolinas indoor track championship meet. He placed second in the 5,000 meters and helped the Trojan men claim the team title.
The sophomore is the fourth student-athlete in UMO history to earn an in-season national award.
van Dijk, a freshman, won the 200- and 400-meter runs during the women's portion of the Conference Carolinas indoor track championships. A native of the Netherlands, van Dijk participated on the meet-winning 1,600-meter relay and helped the Trojan women secure the team crown.
