No. 5 Trojans split twinbill with Concord

MOUNT OLIVE -- A seven-run, second-inning outburst propelled No. 5-ranked University of Mount Olive to a 14-1 victory over Concord (W. Va.) University in game two of its non-conference doubleheader at Scarborough Field on Sunday evening.

Concord won the opener, 11-10 in 10 innings.

Willi Martin batted 3-for-4 and Jordy Farthing notched his second decision on the bump in the nightcap. Farthing, a Campbell University transfer, permitted one run and fanned six Concord batters in a five-inning stint.

Senior southpaw Josh Frederick supplied four innings of five-strikeout relief.

DeAndre Allen started the second-inning uprising with a single through the left side. Preseason All-American Bradon Reitano was hit by a pitch and after an infield flyout, Justin Manning drew a walk to load the bases.

Martin cleared the diamond with a three-RBI triple. Cody Britt connected on an RBI double to score Martin. Zak Orrison walked and Jay Gonzales was hit by a pitch to load the sacks again.

Orrison scored on a passed ball and Rob Shipman capped the rally with an RBI walk.

The Mountain Lions (1-1 overall) built a six-run advantage through 31/2 innings in the opener. The Trojans (5-3) tied the game at 8-8 with a five-run sixth inning that included a pair of two-RBI hits by Manning and Bretton Gouthro.

Each team plated one run in the eighth.

Concord added two 10th-inning runs and hung on to hand UMO its third defeat in its last four outings.

Alex Regan started and yielded seven runs (six earned) on seven hits in 31/3 innings. Freshman Kodi Whitley delivered 51/3 innings of six-hit, four-strikeout relief.

Deshorn Lake endured the mound loss.

After eight hours and 19 innings of baseball on Sunday, the teams conclude the three-game set today. First pitch is 1 p.m.
