Trojan men hit century mark against Belmont Abbey

BELMONT -- Dontrell Brite pumped in a game-high 22 points as the University of Mount Olive dismantled in-state Conference Carolinas men's basketball foe Belmont Abbey, 100-61, on Monday evening.

The Trojans won for the seventh time in their last eight outings.

Brite and Jordan McCain, who scored 18 points, combined to 16 for 20 from the floor. Kendall Hargrove contributed 13 points on 6 of 6 shooting. John Weiland knocked down 15 points.

Dory Hines supplied nine points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

Mount Olive (15-8 overall, 9-4 CC) visit Lees-McRae on Wednesday.

Softball

PEMBROKE -- Madison Johnston threw a complete game and the University of Mount Olive benefited from two extra-inning sacrifice flies in a 3-2 victory over Peach Belt member UNC Pembroke on Monday afternoon.

The Braves won the nightcap, 10-8.

In the opener, Kelsey Akers scored the go-ahead run on an out in foul territory. Beth Overman crossed home on Tiffany Hawley's game-winning sac fly.

Johnston sealed the outcome with a game-ending strikeout in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Kaytee Wilson's three-RBI double and Brea Hartley's three-run home run boosted the Braves' advantage to 10-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning. UMO countered with two seventh-inning runs, but UNCP hurler Selena Ashley recorded her sixth strikeout to cap the complete-game win.

The Trojans (3-5 overall) open the home portion of their season Wednesday against South Atlantic Conference member Wingate University. First pitch is 2 p.m.

Lacrosse

MOUNT OLIVE -- Jake Hancock sparked a late first-period offensive surge and the University of Mount Olive cruised past in-state foe Catawba, 13-5, in a non-conference men's lacrosse game Monday afternoon.

Hancock's goal with 1:37 remaining triggered a three-goal outburst that included scores from Stephen Bowland and Matt Shields. UMO led 5-1 after one period.

Catawba climbed to within two goals, but could get no closer. The Trojans (2-0 overall) got goals from Daniel Shields and Jesse Mitchell, which led to a four-goal advantage at halftime.

UMO led 10-4 after three periods.

The Trojans travel to Wingate on Saturday.

Women's basketball

BELMONT -- The University of Mount Olive's seven-game win streak ended with a 76-59 loss to in-state Conference Carolinas foe Belmont Abbey on Monday evening.

Joneiqua Gary paced the Trojans' offense with 16 points. Kirksten Mitchell provided 12 points and nine rebounds.

Mount Olive (18-7 overall, 12-3 CC) is the guest of Lees-McRae on Wednesday.
