Trojans net upset of No. 17-ranked Francis Marion

MOUNT OLIVE -- Stan Roffe clinched the overall match point at No. 4 singles and the University of Mount Olive stunned No. 17-ranked Francis Marion, 5-4, in a non-conference men's tennis contest Sunday afternoon.
The No. 2 tandem of Henric Falkenberg-Matt Finnerty and No. 3 duo of Brahm Moolman-Roffe gave the Trojans a 2-1 advantage after doubles play.
Top-seeded Edgar Bub triumphed at No. 1 singles. Finnerty, the No. 2 seed, bounced back from a middle-set loss to defeat Marius Wahlier 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
Roffe secured the outcome with a 6-3, 7-5 win over the Patriots' Tim Ruepke.
Mount Olive entertains in-state foe Chowan on Feb. 20.
Baseball
AIKEN, S.C. -- Tyler Moore's grand slam home run broke up Gunner Kines' no-hitter and propelled No. 2-ranked USC Aiken to a 10-5 victory over the University of Mount Olive on the final day of the Prestige Appliance Classic.
The No. 4-ranked Trojans finished 1-2 in the three-day affair.
Kines carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. He issued a lead-off walk to Sean Miller, a bunt single to Dylan Durham and hit a batter to load the bases. Moore cleared the diamond with his round-tripper, which turned a 2-0 deficit into a 4-2 advantage for USCA.
TJ Costens added a two-out, two-RBI homer in the seventh, which was part of a six-run outburst.
Mount Olive (4-2 overall) answered in the ninth. Rob Shipman, Tyler Farmer and Zak Orrison each delivered an RBI hit, which closed the gap to 10-5.
Kines (1-1) worked 51/3 innings in the loss. Derek Justice and Deshorn Lake combined for 11/3 innings of no-hit, one-strikeout relief.
Reitano, Shipman, Farmer and Justin Manning cranked out two hits apiece.
Weather permitting, the Trojans entertain in-state foe St. Augustine's on Wednesday. First pitch is 3 p.m.
Women's golf
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- University of Mount Olive sophomore Julie Loennechen shares 10th place after opening-round play of the World Golf Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
Loennechen recorded pars on eight of the first nine holes and concluded with a 76 for the Trojans, who are 12th in the team standings. Emy Ohling (83), Lovisa Tillstrom (86) and Stefany King (87) rounded out the team score.
The 36-hole event concludes today.
Indoor track
The University of Mount Olive men's and women's indoor track and field team members established school records and NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks during weekend meets contested at the Armory Invitational and Vince Brown Invitational.
At the Armory Invitational in New York City, freshman Chelsea van Dijk broke her own school record and established a provisional qualifying time of 56.78 seconds in the women's 400 meters. She posted a time of 56.78 seconds, beating her previous best by nearly three seconds.
The Trojans now have provisional qualifiers in three women's events. Aerostata Brown, who also competed in the Armory Invitational, already established provisional marks in the long jump and triple jump.
Dylan Lafond posted a provisional-qualifying time (8:14.39) in the 3,000 meters at the Armory Invitational. Austin Steagall beat the existing school record by 37 seconds and logged a provisional time of 14:21.24 in the 5,000.
Ronnie Sturgill set the previous program mark.
Karl Goodman, Aki Kitagawa and Jacob Urys joined Lafond to set a school-record and provisional time of 10:01.19 in the distance medley. Goodman also broke his own school record in the 400 meters with a time of 50.13 seconds.
The foursome of Bailee Henry, Wislande Maxy, Alexis McNeil and Brionna Simmons posted a time of 13:23.90 to beat the previous school record by seven seconds during the women's distance medley at the Vince Brown Invitational in Newport News, Va.
Donavann Thornton set a new school record in the weight throw (13.85 meters). Ryan Campbell held the previous mark.
Mount Olive returns to action Feb. 23 in the season-ending Conference Carolinas men's and women's indoor track and field championships.
Women's tennis
MOUNT OLIVE -- No. 12-ranked Francis Marion prevailed at the top three singles flights and handed the University of Mount Olive a 7-2, non-conference loss on Sunday afternoon.
The No. 2 tandem of Maite Belloso-Alejandra Hernandez claimed the Trojans' lone doubles point. Belloso earned a three-set victory at No. 6 singles.
Mount Olive (4-1 overall) plays host to Chowan University on Feb. 20.
