University of Mount Olive weekend wrap up

AIKEN, S.C. -- Bradon Reitano went 4-for-5 with five RBI and a three-run homerun in the seventh as the nationally fourth-ranked University of Mount Olive defeated Shepherd University 14-3 on Saturday in the Prestige Appliance Classic.

Jay Gonzalez tallied two hits for the Trojans. Justin Manning supplied three RBI. DeAndre Allen and Chase Edwards both drove in a pair of runs. Gonzalez also stole three bases.

Jordy Farthing surrendered three runs (two earned) on five hits in five innings of work to earn the win on the mound. Josh Frederick tossed four scoreless innings to record the save on the save.

Mount Olive (4-1) concludes play in the Prestige Appliance Classic today against USC-Aiken. The game is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Men's basketball

BRISTOL, TENN. -- The University of Mount Olive trimmed a 25-point halftime deficit to seven but fell 115-95 at Conference Carolinas foe King on Saturday night.

Dontrell Brite, Kendall Hargrove and John Wieland each scored 17 points for the Trojans. Mount Olive had its five-game winning streak snapped.

King hit 11 of its first 15 3-pointers and finished 21 of 35 from long range.

The Trojans (13-8, 7-4 CC) continue conference play on Wednesday at Belmont Abbey.

Women's basketball

BRISTOL, TENN. -- Joneiqua Gary scored 20 points and the University of Mount Olive defeated King 78-53 in Conference Carolinas play on Saturday evening.

The Trojans (14-7) won their sixth consecutive game and improved to 9-4 in conference play. Mount Olive's Jasmine McDonald scored 15 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. Ty Wallace added 11 points and nine rebounds.

The Trojans visit conference opponent Belmont Abbey on Wednesday.

Softball

MARS HILL -- Jennifer Jones' two-run homer highlighted a two-out four-run rally in the top of the seventh, but the rally fell short as University of Mount Olive dropped a wild 15-14 decision to Mars Hill University in game two of a non-conference softball doubleheader on Saturday.

Beth Overman and Kalie Smith also homered for the Trojans.

Mount Olive fell 11-5 in the opener as Mars Hill scored six runs in the first inning and the Trojans never recovered. Tiffany Hawley homered for the Trojans.

Katie Moore and Smith paced Mount Olive's 17-hit attack with three hits apiece and were among seven Trojan players with multi-hit games. Moore also had three hits in both ends of Friday's doubleheader at Lenoir-Rhyne.

Mount Olive returns to action Tuesday as the Trojans travel to UNC Pembroke in a non-conference doubleheader. The meeting will pit Trojan head coach Jaime Kylis-Higginbotham against one of her former assistants, Brittany Bennett. Bennett, who is in her first year as UNCP's head softball coach, was an assistant coach in 2007 when Mount Olive recorded a school record 39 wins and Kylis-Higginbotham won the first of her three Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year awards. Game time is 1 p.m.

Men's volleyball

MOUNT OLIVE -- Garrett Dimm led four players in double figures with a career-high 20 kills as University of Mount Olive stormed back from a first-set loss with a 26-28, 25-17, 25-14, 25-23 victory over King University in Conference Carolinas play on Saturday.

Angel Dache had 16 kills for Mount Olive, while Lewis Einarson added 15 kills and Steven Cruse finished with 11, marking the first time this season four Trojans reached double figures. Quaid Marin recorded a career-high 57 assists and added seven digs, while Keaton Marin notched a team-high eight digs. The Trojans compiled a .366 team hitting percentage for the match and hit at a .427 clip over the final three sets.

Saturday's contest was Mount Olive's last home match until March 11 and the Trojans have only two regular season home matches remaining. Mount Olive travels to Conference Carolinas opponent Pfeiffer on Tuesday. Match time is 7 p.m.

Men's tennis

HICKORY -- University of Mount Olive swept all three doubles matches and won five singles matches in straight sets on its way to an 8-1 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne in non-conference play on Friday.

Mount Olive (4-1) lost only seven total games in the three doubles match as Edgar Bub and Rik Wolthuis won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles and Matt Finnerty and Henric Falkenberg posted an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles. Stanley Roffe and Paul Wiederspahn finished with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.

Mount Olive has its home opener today as the Trojans play host to nationally 17th-ranked Francis Marion University in a non-conference match-up. Match time is 1 p.m. at Walker Tennis Center on the University of Mount Olive campus.

Women's tennis

HICKORY -- Francesca Ceppi won in straight sets at No. 1 singles and combined with Roxanne Chouinard for a win at No. 1 doubles as University of Mount Olive opened its spring season with a 6-3 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne University in non-conference action on Friday.

The Trojans, who carried a 3-0 fall record into spring competition, won two of three doubles matches and captured the top three singles flights.

Mount Olive (4-0) took a 2-1 lead in doubles after Ceppi and Chouinard posted an 8-1 victory and Samara Paldinho and Paulina Delgado won 9-7 at No. 3 doubles. Ceppi won 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) and Chouinard won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Alejandra Hernandez dropped the first set at No. 2 singles 6-2, but rallied for a 6-0 win in the second set. The third set was tied 5-5 when Lenoir-Rhyne's Nateesha Hurtt retired to give Hernandez the win. Maite Belloso won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.

Mount Olive has its home opener today as the Trojans play host to nationally 12th-ranked Francis Marion University in a non-conference match-up. Match time is 1 p.m. at Walker Tennis Center on the University of Mount Olive campus.

Men's lacrosse

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. -- Daniel Shield scores five goals as the University of Mount Olive defeated Young Harris College 18-4 in non-conference men's lacrosse in their season opener Saturday afternoon.

Trojan brother duo of Matt Shields and D. Shields combined for three goals and two assists in the first period as Mount Olive unloaded their offense arsenal and went on a 7-0 run. Young Harris (1-1) got on the board with under a minute to go as Tyler Price slung in a shot with :57 to go in the first period.

Mount Olive returns to action next Saturday as they open up at home against Catawba at Amon Field match time is set for 2 p.m.
