Girls' basketball

Wayne Country Day 28,

Greenfield 18

* Wayne Country Day closed the game with a 12-3 run and turned back archrival Greenfield, 28-18, in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference regular-season finale for both teams Friday evening.

Kaitlyn Daniels' consecutive offensive putbacks pushed the Chargers' advantage to 15-5 early in the third quarter. The Knights answered with an 11-0 run, capped by Kaitlyn Newman's 3-pointer to start the fourth period.

Bailee Creger drained two free throws to put WCDS back in front, 16-15, with 5:14 remaining in regulation. Karis Hawkins' two free throws and Maggie O'Daniel's basket in transition made it 20-15.

Greenfield's Briona Chavis, who led all scorers with 10 points, closed the gap to 20-18. However, the Knights could get no closer.

Meredith Roethling polished off the senior night victory with two free throws in the closing seconds. It was the last regular-season home game for Roethling, Creger and Hawkins -- the final holdovers from the Chargers' state runner-up team in 2010.

Hawkins finished with eight points an 10 rebounds, while Creger collected seven points, six rebounds and two steals. Daniels contributed five points and 10 rebounds.

O'Daneil supplied three points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal.

WCDS (7-15 overall, 5-5 CPIC) returns to action Tuesday in the season-ending CPIC tournament.

Rosewood 60, Spring Creek 25

* SEVEN SPRINGS -- Rosewood overcame a slow first quarter on its way to a 60-25 rout of Spring Creek in Carolina 1-A Conference play Friday evening.

The Eagles' Lexi Mercer led all scorers with 30 points to go with seven rebounds. Deziree Baker provided 10 points and nine rebounds.

Frequent whistles and choppy play disrupted Rosewood's offensive rhythm in the opening quarter. The Eagles responded by outscoring Spring Creek 24-7 in the second quarter and led 38-15 at halftime.

"We want to score a lot of points, that's just the way we play basketball," Rosewood head coach Rick Grantham said. "The way the game was played, we would play a few seconds and then there would be a foul. I thought as the game went on we did a better job of forcing turnovers and getting out in transition."

Amber Buchan scored eight points for the Gators.

The Eagles (17-1 overall, 10-0 CC) visit James Kenan on Monday. Spring Creek (5-13, 4-7) travels to James Kenan on Tuesday.

Goldsboro 63, Ayden-Grifton 26

* AYDEN -- Goldsboro's Destini Covington torched the nets for 25 points in a 63-26 thrashing of Carolina 1-A Conference foe Ayden-Grifton on Friday evening.

Tyona Moses added 19 points, while Markia Garner scored seven. Nickie Tyler and Amari Thompson contributed six and four points, respectively.

Princeton 51, North Duplin 29

* PRINCETON -- Senior Savanna Massengill just missed a double-double during Princeton's 51-29 victory over Carolina 1-A Conference foe North Duplin on Friday evening.

Massengill posted 19 points and nine rebounds, and shot 11 for 11 from the free throw line in the Bulldogs' home win. Guard Charley Cox chipped in 10 points.

Shaily McCarty provided 11 points for the Rebels. Deja Aycock poured in nine points and Rylee Pate recorded six points.

Princeton (12-7 overall, 9-2 CC) plays host to Lakewood on Tuesday.

Southern Wayne 46, New Bern 26

* NEW BERN -- Zaria Atkins tallied 20 points and collected seven steals during Southern Wayne's 46-26 romp over Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference foe New Bern on Friday evening.

Keajah Wilson added 12 points for the Saints.

Southern Wayne (13-8 overall, 4-5 ECC) is the guest of D.H. Conley on Monday.

Boys' basketball

Goldsboro 71, Ayden-Grifton 53

* AYDEN -- Myron Carmon paced three Goldsboro players in double figures with 18 points during a 71-53 triumph over Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference foe Ayden-Grifton on Friday evening.

Rasheen Artis contributed 15 points and picked the Chargers for two steals. Tyrique Tyson scored 12 points on 5 of 5 shooting from the floor, grabbed nine rebounds, blocked four shots and grabbed five steals.

Joe Baker pulled down six boards.

The Cougars visited South Lenoir on Saturday.

Princeton 62, North Duplin 53

* PRINCETON -- Tanner Woodard dropped in 19 points and Princeton cruised past North Duplin, 62-53, on the Carolina 1-A Conference scene Friday evening.

Alex Whitley and Michael Wooten knocked down 15 points apiece for the Bulldogs.

Cedrick Kornegay led a balanced Rebels' attack with 12 points. Savon Scott and Daron Goodman tallied nine points apiece. Cody Ivey scored eight points.

James Kenan 85, Hobbton 36

* WARSAW -- Keshawn Ammons delivered a 16-point, four-steal outing during James Kenan's 85-36 romp over winless Hobbton in a Carolina 1-A Conference game contested at Harmon Gym on Friday evening.

Antonio Smith contributed 13 points and five rebounds. John Brooks supplied 12 points and eight rebounds, while TJ Fullwood and Nick Taylor tallied 11 points apiece. Taylor had six rebounds.

The Tigers collected 20 steals as a team and had 17 assists on 34 made field goals. Fullwood dished out four assists, while Telvin Wallace had three.

Kinston 75, Greene Central 70

* Brandon Belcher scored 16 points as Greene Central endured a 75-70 loss to Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference leader Kinston on Friday evening.

Trequan Wade scored nine points. Curtez Braswell and Antoine Davis added eight and seven points, respectively.

Greene Central (9-11) fell to 1-6 in ECC play this season.

New Bern 89, Southern Wayne 54

* NEW BERN -- Tarvis Bradshaw posted 23 points in Southern Wayne's 89-54 loss to Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference foe New Bern on Friday evening.

Zxavier Pearsall added nine points.

The Saints (9-12 overall, 3-6 ECC) travel to D.H. Conley on Monday.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro 62, Ayden-Grifton 46 -- Kisheem Faison pumped in 16 points in the Cougars' road win. Daryl Gaddis contributed nine points, while Jaryan Hargis chipped in seven. Ronnie Tookes pulled down four rebounds and Demonte Wells collected four steals. Goldsboro (12-7 overall) improved to 5-2 in Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference play this season.

* Boys' basketball: South Central 61, C.B. Aycock 44 -- Cameron Kornegay scored 16 points in the Golden Falcons' loss. Jaquan Ray added seven points. Brandon Cowan and Jesse Snickers chipped in six points apiece.

* Boys' basketball: Greenfield 68, Wayne Country Day 52 -- Corey Carpenter led the Chargers' offense with 20 points. PJ Hill knocked down 11. WCDS (8-4 overall) returns to action next Thursday in the season-ending Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference tournament.

* Girls' basketball: Greenfield 18, Wayne Country Day 10 -- Kaitlyn Daniels paced the Chargers with four points. Langley Barnes and Lillian Freeman scored two points apiece. WCDS (4-10) is home next Thursday against an undetermined opponent in the CPIC tournament.

* Girls' basketball: South Central 34, C.B. Aycock 22 -- Charles B. Aycock fell to 2-14 overall and 1-9 in Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference play.

Middle schools

* Boys' basketball: Greenfield 34, Wayne Country Day 32 -- Marcus Metcalf collected 13 points in the Chargers' regular-season finale. Sam Smith scored nine points. James Thompson and Sam Dively added four points apiece, while Drew Barnes scored two. WCDS concluded the year 4-11 overall.
