Grimes, SC girls crush Wildcats

SEVEN SPRINGS --The game had been over for nearly an hour, but Jazlyn Grimes still had no idea what she had achieved during Spring Creek's 50-28 Thursday evening victory over Carolina 1-A Conference rival Hobbton.

So when the sophomore was asked how it felt to record a double-double given the fact that she scored just five points, her eyes lit up.

"Really?" she said of her 10-rebound, 10-steal outing. "That's cool."

The Lady Gators (5-12 overall, 4-6 Carolina) made sure the outcome of the contest was never in question by holding the Wildcats (2-11, 2-8) to just two first-quarter points.

But it was their defense that kept Hobbton's players on their toes for the duration of the game. Spring Creek tallied 23 steals in a performance that left head coach Charlie Cotten confident about the direction his team is moving, as they prepare to face state-ranked Rosewood tonight in Seven Springs.

"I thought we did pretty well defensively. Overall, it was a good effort," he said. "They have a lot of potential. They're not even close to where they could be."

Cotten suggested that his young team still has plenty to improve upon. At the same time, he had nothing but good things to say about Grimes flirting with a triple-double.

"Jaz is a talented young lady. You know, she's a sophomore and for not having a whole lot of experience, she's come quite a long way in such a short period of time," Cotten said. "I love her hustle and I love the way she thinks. She really goes after it."

The Gators got key contributions from Tysha Teachey, who scored 15 points and pulled down six rebounds. Destiney Sutton racked up 15 points picked the Wildcats for six steals.

Hobbton's Nina Bell posted her own double-double -- 16 points and 10 rebounds. She fell just three blocks shy of a triple-double.
