Reitano homers in first at-bat, UMO sweeps WSSU

WINSTON-SALEM -- Preseason All-American Bradon Reitano homered during his first at-bat and No. 4-ranked University of Mount Olive swept Winston-Salem State, 9-5 and 4-1, at BB&T Ballpark on Saturday afternoon.

Reitano delivered three hits on the day for the Trojans, who improved to 59-0 all-time against Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association schools since 1994. The teams will play single game today at 1 p.m.

Newcomer Rob Shipman paced UMO's offense with three hits and an RBI in game one. Right fielder Chase Edwards contributed two hits, including a double, and plated three runs.

DeAndre Allen batted 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Preseason All-American southpaw Alex Regan claimed the mound win. The junior permitted four earned runs on eight hits and fanned seven WSSU batters in six innings. Josh Frederick threw 1/3 of an inning and freshman Kodi Whitley provided three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

Returning starter Zak Orrison cranked out two hits and stole a base in the nightcap. Reitano walked twice, Edwards supplied an RBI and Shipman drove in a pair of runs.

Starter Jordy Farthing, middle reliever Brody McDonald and closer Derek Justice held the Rams scoreless the final six innings. Farthing struck out two and gave up an unearned run in four innings.

McDonald earned the win with two innings of no-hit, two-strikeout relief. Justice struck out three WSSU batters in three innings to collect the save.

The Rams out-hit the Trojans, 19-18, in the twinbill.

Softball

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Rain postponed opening-round play in the Armstrong Atlantic State University Invitational on Saturday.

Weather permitting, the University of Mount Olive will play South Atlantic Conference member Tusculum (Tenn.) at 12:30 p.m. today. The Trojans will face No. 5-ranked Armstrong later in the day.

Men's volleyball

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Angel Dache recorded team highs in kills (11) and digs (seven) during the University of Mount Olive's 14-25, 13-25, 19-25 loss to No. 12-ranked Penn State on Friday evening.

Lewis Einarson recorded three blocks for the Trojans, who endured their fifth consecutive loss of the season. Ben Boncella, Alex Palmatier and Quaid Marin provided two blocks apiece.

Marin dished out 20 assists.

Penn State owned the advantage in team kills (36-24) and team blocks (14-6).

The Trojans (1-5 overall) travel to St. Francis (Pa.) University today. First serve is 3 p.m.
