Buzzard Brawl: Rosewood claims team championship

BUIES CREEK -- The lone 1-A school in a tournament loaded with talented wrestlers, Rosewood claimed the Buzzard Brawl team championship contested at Campbell University on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles, who did not have an individual gold medalist, edged West Brunswick 145.5-144 for the team crown. Pittsboro Northwood took third with 134.5 points, followed by Carrboro (122.5) and Cleveland (120.5).
Malique Boyd joined the program's Century Club (100 wins) with a 5-4 decision over South View's D'Jarius Jones. Boyd logged a 3-1 record and placed fifth overall at 113 pounds.
"Saturday's performance was simply unbelievable," RHS head coach Bill Edmundson said. "We have a phenomenal group of overachievers who have bought into the idea that hard work pays off. Every wrestler contributed to this unprecedented series of events.
"All day, we were in second place which was really hard to believe considering the number of teams and level of competition."
Rosewood held a 1.5-point advantage over West Brunswick with a handfull of individual bouts remaining. The Eagles endured losses at 220 pounds and heavyweight, but Hillside sealed Rosewood's tournament-title bid with a victory over West Brunswick at heavyweight.
Rayquon Jones placed second at 220 pounds, while teammate Kaleb Smith emerged runner-up at 160 pounds. Sam Drew took third in the 132-pound weight class, while twin brother Josh ended up fifth at 170.
Kaleb Taylor captured fourth at heavyweight. Trevor Thompson grabbed fifth place at 152, while Evan Reiss seized sixth place at 145. Jayden Thomas (106 pounds) and Garner Beasley (182) each shared seventh place in their respective weight classes.
David Dotson, Nick Martin, Chad Keefer and Quan Joyner also participated in the day-long, 31-team event.
