Winter weather is expected to blanket certain regions of North Carolina late this afternoon and evening, which prompted Wayne County Public Schools officials to cancel all after-school activities scheduled for today.
Students were dismissed at 1:15 p.m.
The decision caused the postponement of five basketball matchups and the final regular-season swim meet at the Goldsboro Family Y, which is also senior night. Eastern Wayne and Southern Wayne moved their basketball contests to Wednesday. Rosewood will travel to Neuse Charter on Thursday.
Make-up dates were not announced for Princeton at Lakewood; Ayden-Grifton at Goldsboro and Wilson Christian at Faith Christian.
Wayne Country Day athletics director Michael Taylor said today's games with Freedom Christian are still on schedule.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the northern mountains of western North Carolina until 6 a.m. Wednesday. The forecast is for up to six inches of snow, while upwards of two inches is expected in the Asheville area.
A winter weather advisory is in effect across much of central, eastern and northeastern North Carolina until midnight tonight. Up to 2 inches of snow is possible in some areas. Three inches of snow is predicted for Elizabeth City and at least one inch of snow is forecast for the Outer Banks.
