KINSTON -- Defending N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A state champion Kinston handed Goldsboro a 56-27 loss in Eastern Carolina 2-A action Friday evening.
The Cougars had their string consecutive regular-season conference victories snapped at 41.
Kinston, ranked No. 6 in the NCpreps.com 2-A poll, benefited from a 12-minute cold-shooting stretch by Goldsboro. A four-point, first-quarter lead swelled to 30-13 early in the third period.
Sophomore Tyona Moses, who led all scorers 18 points, whittled the deficit to 30-18 with a 3-pointer and layup off of a steal. But senior Brittany Drumgoole answered with a 3-pointer and uncontested layup of her own to squelch any further hopes of a comeback.
Drumgoole tallied 15 points for the Vikings.
Kinston dished 15 assists as a team on 19 made field goals.
Goldsboro (4-10 overall, 1-1 ECC) made eight field goals and eight free throws as it suffered its first conference defeat since 2009 when it competed in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference.
