Charles B. Aycock weathered the storm early, survived a late surge and earned its first Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference victory of the season Friday evening.

Senior Michael Williams scored 27 points and pulled down 15 rebounds in the Golden Falcons' 56-54 triumph over county foe Eastern Wayne.

"I thought that controlling the pace of the game was very important," Golden Falcons head coach Tod Morgan said. "In the first quarter it got a little hectic and (Eastern Wayne) built a little bit of a lead, but as the game wore on we did a better job on the boards and were able to slow it down."

Eastern Wayne got a pair of 3-pointers from Jeremiah Miller in the opening six minutes and jumped ahead 9-0 before C.B. Aycock got on the scoreboard.

The Warriors led 14-8 after one quarter.

Williams found the range in the second period and scored 10 points in the period as C.B. Aycock roared back to grab the lead. Foul trouble plagued the Warriors, who trailed 27-25 at halftime.

A slow, choppy third quarter allowed C.B. Aycock (6-10 overall, 1-5 ECC) to pull away by two possessions. The lead bounced between five and eight points until the final two minutes of the game.

Williams converted one free throw with 56 seconds on the clock to put the Golden Falcons ahead 55-51. Kamone Best answered with a driving layup for the Warriors.

Tyrique Ford sank one free throw with 22 seconds remaining to extend Aycock's lead to 56-53. Micah Smith hit one free throw for Eastern Wayne to complete the scoring.

Following a pair of misses by the Golden Falcons with 2.2 seconds left, Eastern Wayne's Deshawn Boudy collected the rebound and heaved a shot from three-quarters court that fell harmlessly left of the target.

"I think our guys are understanding a little bit more about what it takes to win these close games," Morgan said. "You have to have everyone buying in to the system in order for it to work. Hopefully tonight we took another step in that direction."

Zeke Martin paced Eastern Wayne with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Boudy and Smith each added 11 points.

Eastern Wayne (2-7, 2-3) travels to Southern Wayne on Tuesday. Aycock entertains South Johnston on Wednesday.
