Oakwood was bold enough to challenge Wayne Country Day to a 3-point shooting contest Thursday night.

The Chargers were more than content to fire away from long range. The two teams combined to knock down 21 3-pointers in Wayne Country Day's 84-60 rout in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference play.

Lee Atkinson led Wayne Country Day with 20 points. Shahim Muhammed supplied 17 points and Joel Davis added 14 points. Jamal Forde and Victor Miller each had 10.

Trey Burney scored 18 points for the Eagles.

Both teams played a torrid pace and scored in transition during the opening quarter. The Chargers sank five 3-pointers, including Davis' three that was part of a 24-4 run.

WCDS led 29-12 after eight minutes.

"We're going to have to shoot the ball well and we did," Wayne Country Day head coach David Flowers said. "I know they answered back, but we kind of did a little bit extra. When we're shooting the ball well like that and the tempo is kind of fast paced, it doesn't bother me a bit even though they hit a couple of shots."

Despite the margin on the scoreboard, Oakwood continued to attack offensively. Six different Eagles connected from beyond the arc in the first half to force the Chargers out of their zone defense.

The two teams combined to make 15 3-pointers in the first two quarters. Wayne Country Day responded as Atkinson scored 10 of his 20 points in the second quarter and the Chargers led 52-28 at halftime.

"The thing I liked about tonight is early on we were looking for the open man," Flowers said. "We were finding the right guy to take the shot and not just catching and shooting. We were moving the ball and then penetrating in. Lee did a good job of finding the open guy."

Wayne Country Day (17-7 overall, 3-1 CPIC) maintained its sizable margin throughout the second half which allowed Flowers to substitute freely. The Chargers got 15 points from their bench players.

Wayne Country Day plays host to CPIC foe Freedom on Tuesday.
