Rosewood girls extend win streak to 5 games

CLAYTON -- Rosewood carries a five-game win streak into the New Year's break after slipping past Nash Central, 59-57, during the girls' portion of the inaugural Cleveland Christmas Classic on Saturday.
Lexi Mercer scored a team-high 21 points for the Eagles, who triumphed for the ninth time in 10 tries this season. The sophomore shot just 4 of 17 from the floor, but drained 12 of 15 free throws. Mercer has 257 points this season and 718 total in 35 career varsity starts.
Senior Alicia Burns provided 14 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals. Junior guard Krystal Yelverton chipped in 13 points and passed out three assists.
Rosewood and Nash Central, of the Big East 3-A Conference, battled to a 34-34 tie at halftime. The Eagles held a slim three-point advantage after three periods and held on for the neutral-court victory.
Senior Ni'Ya Stiles poured in a game-high 31 points for the Bulldogs.
The Eagles return to action Jan. 3 at Carolina 1-A Conference foe Lakewood. The Leopards won three consecutive Tri-County regular-season championships from 2010-12 and emerged as the eastern regional runners-up in 2012.
