Rosewood claims tournament title

* BETHEL -- Joshua Drew emerged the 170-pound individual champion and helped Rosewood claim the 22nd annual Pierce-Davis Memorial team crown contested at North Pitt High School on Saturday.

The Eagles edged the host Panthers 159-147.5 in team action. Princeton placed 14th with 57.5 points, while North Lenoir shared 18th with Tarboro High. Goldsboro ended up 20th among the 23 participating schools.

Drew posted two second-period falls, a technical fall and upended Pamlico's Connor Hough, 8-2, in the title bout.

Rosewood heavyweight Kaleb Taylor took second. Teammates Malique Boyd (113 pounds), Sam Drew (138) and Kaleb Smith (182) pounds each recorded a third-place effort at their respective weight classes.

Princeton 160-pounder Jesse Tomljenovich went 4-1 on the day, while teammates Dillon Pace (152) and Cody Parrish (170) collected three victories apiece.

Michael Daughtry finished 2-2 at 126 pounds.

North Lenoir 170-pounder Luke Wiggins won three individual matches. Teammates Raekwan Miller (106), Doug Penny (120) and Malik Gumby (160) each fashioned a 2-2 worksheet.

The Hawks' Alex Jones, Feronte Harris, Tyler Carraway and James Durant each won one bout.

Goldsboro 113-pounder D'Qurious Bradford and 145-pounder Jamelle Jones each concluded the day 2-2 overall. Jharron Flanagan and Deverntay Carmichael each won one match.

Boys' basketball

WCDS takes third place

* WILSON -- Lee Atkinson and Joel Davis each earned all-tournament recognition and Wayne Country Day finished third in the 2013 Wilson Christian Charger Classic.

Davis emerged one of four players in double figures with 14 points during a 98-45 victory over host WCA in the third-place game. Victor Miller pumped in a team-high 16 points. Jason Jones and Tyler Talton contributed 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Atkinson logged five assists and five steals.

The Chargers opened Classic play with a 68-56 loss to Burlington School. Atkinson paced three players in double figures with 21 points. Davis chipped in 12 points and Miller knocked down 11.

Davis had six rebounds. Atkinson passed out four assists.

Wayne Country Day (8-2 overall) entertains Fayetteville Christian on Tuesday.
