NEWTON GROVE -- The early timeout proved useful.

Disconnected offensively and lacking communication on the volleyball court, Spring Creek dropped eight of the first 12 points to Lakewood in opening-set play Wednesday afternoon.

Gators head coach Deanna Morris called a timeout and delivered a blistering 1-minute tongue lashing that echoed in the Hobbton High School gymnasium.

Spring Creek answered with a 21-7 run and eventually dumped Lakewood 25-14, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23 to grab the No. 3 seed for the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A playoffs, which begin Saturday.

Spring Creek (15-6 overall) is the guest of Coastal 10 champion Camden County. A match time has not been determined.

Lakewood drew the No. 4 seed.

Outside hitter Rachel McCullom cranked out a match-high 27 kills for the Gators, who beat the Leopards for the second time this season. Olivia Martinez added 14 kills, while Alana Price posted two blocks.

Sarah Ford dished out 36 assists.

Rashyda Parker paced Lakewood with 19 kills and five solo blocks. Setters Amanda Kook and Emily Lewis combined for 31 assists.

The Gators owned a 51-38 edge in team kills.
