Aycock drops another 1-goal heartbreaker

PIKEVILLE -- Six minutes of solid defensive soccer is all that stood between Charles B. Aycock and one of the biggest upsets of the season on the Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference soccer scene Tuesday night.

Six minutes proved to be too much time.

D.H. Conley scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute and completed an unlikely 2-1 win at Hardy Talton Stadium.

"Just another one-goal game that we let get away from us," C.B. Aycock assistant coach Byron Adkins said. "It's been the same thing all season, we do the hard work and we let it slip away. Same story tonight."

The teams waged a defensive battle in the first half that led to very few scoring opportunities. Each team had taken just two shots and entered halftime deadlocked in a 0-0 draw.

Things opened up in the second half on both sides.

C.B. Aycock got the first real chance of the game in the 46th minute when Bobby Hampton launched a throw-in inside the 18-yard box. A pair of Golden Falcons converged on the ball, but failed to get a clean shot. In the 58th minute, Aycock narrowly missed when Tim Naughton's header sailed just wide of the post.

C.B. Aycock finally broke the scoreless tie in the 73rd minute. Chris Grieve played a long ball to Collin Zacharzuk, who raced forward and fired a shot directly at the Vikings' keeper. The wet ball slipped between the keeper's hands and into the net.

Immediately the Golden Falcons' attention turned to protecting a 1-0 lead for the final six minutes.

However, it took D.H. Conley just 90 seconds to tally the equalizer. A long shot found its way into the box that deflected off a C.B. Aycock defender and bounced to Robbie Moore who finished the play with a perfectly-placed shot.

Things went from bad to worse for the Golden Falcons two minutes later when Nate Evans gathered the ball 30 yards away from Aycock's net, dribbled between three defenders and fired a the game-winning shot.

"The first goal is whatever, a kid made a play," Adkins said. "The second goal is the one that is so irritating. (Evans) got the ball and ran to the net while five guys stood and watched. That is hard to understand as a coach. All we had to do was stand him up."

C.B. Aycock keeper Alex Burke finished with five saves on the night. The Vikings earned an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal.

C.B. Aycock (6-8-1 overall, 3-6-1 ECC) visits South Central on Thursday.
