Zacharzuk (Collin) notches hat trick for CBA

A convincing win over a bitter rival is always nice.

Staying in contention for a coveted playoff berth is even better.

Collin Zacharzuk scored three goals and Charles B. Aycock defeated Eastern Wayne 5-2 on Wednesday night in New Hope. The win keeps the Golden Falcons in the hunt for a 3-A playoff spot in the split Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference standings.

"This was the Super Bowl of Wayne County," Aycock assistant coach Byron Adkins said. "This is huge because we lost to Southern Wayne and (Eastern Wayne) still has Southern Wayne to come. That puts us a game behind Southern Wayne, but if Eastern Wayne loses to Southern Wayne that puts them two games behind everybody.

"So, it was a huge game tonight."

The Golden Falcons (5-6-0 overall, 2-4-0 ECC) pressured the Warriors' defense early by working long passes over the top to attacking defenders. Bobby Hampton's shot in the third minute clanged off the post.

Zacharzuk found the back of the net in the sixth minute off Hampton's assist. Warriors' keeper Alex Sandavol saved Zacharzuk's shot in the eighth minute. Hampton was all alone with Sandavol in the 34th minute, but his shot missed wide.

Zacharzuk beat Sandavol to a loose ball in the 34th minute and tucked it in the back of the net to extend Aycock's lead to 2-0.

"When Collin gets going early and he plays well and he scores, we seem to do really well," Adkins said. "When he doesn't score and he gets the chances we kind of get a little deflated and our play goes away"

Eastern Wayne (4-5-0, 1-4-0 ECC) cut the deficit in half in the 42nd minute as Victor Kokiko scored off a cross through the 18-yard box from Deonte' Davis.

The Golden Falcons had Hampton's goal waived off in the 45th minute on an offside call. Aycock was whistled for offside 12 times.

The Golden Falcons put the game away in a devastating sequence that occurred in less than a minute. In the 64th minute, Zacharzuk capped his hat trick with a goal off Chris Grieve's throw in. Moments later, Tim Naughton won a loose ball, dribbled into the 18-yard box and fired a shot past Sandavol as the margin grew to 4-1.

"Our midfield central was hanging too deep and our outsides were not coming to help press the ball," Warriors' head coach Jorg Wagner said. "If you give Aycock enough time they will find a hole."

Grieve later scored off an assist from Naughton.

Eastern Wayne's Ethan Zadrozny scored off Kokiko's assist in the 79th minute.

Aycock finished with an 18-8 edge in shots on goal.

The Warriors visit Southern Wayne on Tuesday. The Golden Falcons play host to New Bern on Oct. 2.
