Carolina 1A cross country teams open season

NEWTON GROVE -- Rosewood's boys and Princeton's girls claimed the team portions of a six-team Carolina 1-A Conference meet on Tuesday at Hobbton.

The Eagles compiled a team score of 30 to claim the boys' portion of the meet. Princeton finished second with 40 points and Hobbton was third with 71. North Duplin tallied an 87 and Spring Creek and Neuse Charter did not record team scores.

The Gators' Gage Abbott was the top male runner with a time of 18 minutes, 44 seconds. Teammate Alan Coor was second in 18:58. Rosewood's Dalton Farmer claimed third-place with a time of 19:16 ahead of the Wildcats' Ceasar Castillo (19:54). Princeton's Matthew Edwards finished with in 20:07.

The Bulldogs won the girls' side of the meet with a team score of 23. Rosewood finished second with 63 points and Hobbton (74) was third. North Duplin recorded a score of 76 while Spring Creek and Neuse Charter failed to earn team scores.

The Eagles' Ashley Duran won the girls' race with a time of 23:40. Princeton's Amber Johnson (23:57), Altheia Balagalo (25:04) and Megan Evans (25:10) claimed the next three spots. North Duplin's Genesis Orellana (25:36) and Haley Thurston (26:09) finished fifth and sixth respectively. Spring Creek's Ashley Meriner earned seventh-place with a time of 26:11.
