Herlihy, Anderson each score twice for EW

Eastern Wayne took advantage of Goldsboro's lack of experience and jumped out to an early lead on the soccer field at Little Big Horn on Monday night.

When the Cougars found their footing in the second half it was too late. The Warriors opened the season with a 5-0 win over their county rivals and snapped a 15-match losing streak dating to last season.

"The result is obviously what we were looking for," Eastern Wayne head coach Jorg Wagner said. "But beyond that, we saw a lot of things that we need to work on including our fitness as a team."

The Warriors (1-0-0 overall) got on the board in the 13th minute when Victor Kokiko kept a ball in play along the sidelines and allowed Joe Herlihy to run on to the play. Herlihy crossed a pass to Christian Anderson who fired the ball into the net.

Anderson added a second goal in the 21st minute off a cross by Kokiko. Herlihy scored twice on a pair of penalty kicks in the 25th and 27th minutes to make it 4-0.

"I feel like we started out a little cautious and made a few early mistakes," Goldsboro head coach Terry Walls said. "There was about a 20-minute stretch there when Eastern Wayne really controlled the play."

Junior Flores capped the scoring for the Warriors in the 39th minute. Fredy Garcia tallied the final assist.

Goldsboro rebounded in the second half, but could not capitalize on a pair of excellent opportunities.

Damon Pate beat his defender in the 56th minute, but watched as the ball rolled just wide of the far post. Two minutes later Michael Evione fired a shot that was saved by Eastern Wayne keeper Alex Sandavol.

"When you look at this game it was really two very different halves," Wagner said. "Goldsboro probably deserved a goal there in the second half, they just couldn't get a bounce to go their way."

Goldsboro (0-1-0 overall) visits Southern Wayne on Wednesday. Eastern Wayne travels to Goldsboro on Aug. 26.
