PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock officials will formally introduce Tod Morgan as their new varsity boys' basketball coach today.

A press conference is scheduled for 2 p.m. in the school's media center.

The Wayne County Board of Education approved Morgan's appointment at its meeting on Monday evening. Morgan succeeds Steve Moats, who coached for three seasons and guided the Golden Falcons to a third-round appearance in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A playoffs this past winter.

Morgan has spent the past five seasons at Chapel Hill High School, and served as athletics director during the last four. He directed the Tigers to 87 victories and three regular-season Carolina Conference championships during his tenure on the bench.

"Coach Ken Miller set the standard for CHHS Tigers' men's basketball with two state championships and an 80-percent winning percentage in the 1980s," Morgan stated in an email sent to HighSchoolOT.com Tuesday evening. "Thanks to the hard work of some special young men and the best assistant coaches in the state, we were able to renew the tradition of the CHHS Tigers basketball program.

"The program is in a great place now and I look forward to seeing the team win more championships in the future."

Morgan's hiring completes a flurry of offseason searches for head varsity coaches by CBA athletics director Charles Davis and principal Dr. Earl Moore. The duo interviewed and filled vacancies in football, women's volleyball, softball and varsity women's basketball.
