Rain cancels second round of WCMA

Heavy rains made playing conditions on the opening day of the Wayne County Men's Amateur tougher than expected.

The wet weather cancelled Saturday's second-round.

After downpours soaked the field at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course on Friday the tournament committee was forced to make a tough decision regarding the continuation of the event. After talking to the staff at Southern Wayne Country Club, where round two was scheduled to take place, the decision was made to cancel the second round.

"Obviously, no one wanted to cancel the second round," tournament committee member Parker King said. "It was just too wet to play at Southern Wayne. We were waiting (Saturday) to see if the third round was going to get in, but it looks like we are going to be able to play it."

Third-round play is scheduled to begin today at 8 a.m. at Lane Tree Golf Club.

Despite the conditions, the scores in the first round were better than expected.

Brandon Campbell took the lead in the Open Division with a round of 67 at GMGC. Ian Buschman fired a 68 and Hayden Gradner carded a 69 on day one. Trae McKee, Bradley Jones, Kevin Brindley, Shane Ogburn and Dane Jones completed a large group of players that each shot 70. Defending champion Clark Rose and Dustin Smith each fired an opening-round 71.

"To see the low numbers come in like this is very impressive," tournament committee member Jody Dean said. "It is wet out there and the conditions are far from ideal. But that goes to show just how good some of these guys are striking the ball right now."

Stan Adams claimed a three-shot lead in the Senior Division with a round of 70. Tim Rose found himself in second place with a round of 73. Jeff Jackson (74) and Ricky Godwin (75) were also in the hunt.

John Zambelli paced the Super Senior Division with a 71. Roland Gurley fired a 74 to wrap-up second place. Charlie Waters and Bill Holiday each carded a 75.

"The final round is going to be really exciting," King said. "There are 13 players in the Open Division within five shots of the lead. A number of guys could post a low number and win this thing."
