Wayne County Junior Amateur: Sutton claims boys' 18U individual crown

Michael Sutton may not be a household name like some of his successful high school golf counterparts in Wayne County.

He is certainly just as capable.

Sutton fired a round of 79 at Walnut Creek Country Club on Monday and claimed medalist honors in the 2013 Wayne County Junior Amateur.

"I work part time out at Lane Tree (Golf Club) so I have been keeping my game in pretty good shape," Sutton said. "I get a lot of time to practice just being around the course so much."

Sutton attends Wayne Early College, which does not allow him to play on a high school golf team.

"The summer is my time to play," Sutton said. "I get out and play in a lot of tournaments and hopefully that will help me get a chance to play in college."

Bryce Webber finished second in the boys' 16-18 age group with a round of 80. Jeremiah Wright shot an 83.

In the boys' 14-15 age group, Ethan McKenzie finished first with a round of 89. Lucas McKay claimed the runner-up spot with a 94. Lindsay Burton won the girls' 14-18 division with a round of 91.

Bryce Jones emerged victorious in the boys' 12-13 division with an 84. Chayce Joyner shot a nine-hole score of 52 to win the boys' 10-11 age group and Chandler Joyner fired a 63 to win the boys' 8-9 division.

Kelly Lewis shot a 54 to win the girls' 8-12 age group.

"The game of golf needs these young players," tournament organizer Jeremy Joyner said. "We need to get more kids out playing and learning the game. Golf is one of the rare sports that a person can play their entire life, so we need to get as many young people involved now to ensure the game's future."

The Wayne County Junior Amateur is the precursor to the Wayne County Men's Amateur, which is July 12-14 at three diferent courses.
