Kinston Post 43 sweeps doubleheader from Wayne County Post 11

MOUNT OLIVE -- Win number 800 will have to wait.

Kinston Post 43 got a pair of sterling pitching performances and swept an Area I East double-header from Wayne County Post 11 on Tuesday night at Scarborough Field.

Kinston won the first game 5-4 and followed with a 3-2 triumph in game two. The losses leave Wayne County stuck on 799 wins as a program.

"We had plenty of chances to win both games and we didn't get it done," Wayne County head coach Jason Sherrer said. "You have to give Kinston credit, they played harder than we did and they deserved to win both games."

The first contest was a back-and-forth affair.

Wayne County grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Ryan Faucette doubled and scored on a base hit by Justin Barbour.

Kinston jumped in front in the third inning with three unearned runs that were the result of three Post 11 errors.

Wayne County (12-4 overall, 6-3 East) got back in front in the fifth inning. Garrett Joyner reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on Faucette's RBI single. Barbour followed with a base hit and Jacob Sasser plated a run with an RBI double. Ashton Cox's productive groundout put Post 11 ahead 4-3.

Post 43 rallied in the top of the seventh when Matt Hinson delivered a pinch-hit single and Will Deters drew a walk. Grant Tyndall plated both runners with a two-run double that put Kinston ahead for good 5-4.

"We didn't make smart plays and we didn't do a very good job of taking care of the baseball," Sherrer said. "Tyndall came up in a big spot and hit one to the fence."

Garrett Blackburn pitched a complete game to get the win on the pitcher's mound. Adam Pate suffered the loss for Post 11 despite a complete-game effort of his own.

As good as Blackburn was for Post 43 in game one, Hinson was even better in game two.

Wayne County took the lead with an unearned run in the third inning before Kinston tied it at 1-1 with an unearned run of its own in the top of the fifth. Post 11 benefited from a Post 43 mistake in the bottom of the inning when Pate doubled and scored on a Kinston error that made the score 2-1.

Garrett Holland led off the seventh inning with a single and was sacrificed to second base. Deters tied the game at 2-2 two batters later with an RBI single.

Kinston (8-3, 5-1) won the game in the ninth when Vaquan Joyner walked, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Joyner scampered home on a second wild pitch just seconds later.

Hinson worked eight innings, allowed just three hits and struck out nine Wayne County batters to get the win. Deters tossed a perfect ninth inning for the save.

"I wasn't pleased with how we played against Wilson (Monday)," Sherrer said. "I kinda felt like we played poorly, but we stole a win. Tonight we looked about the same and it cost us."

Wayne County plays host to Creedmoor on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
