Cambric Moye drafted in 30th round by L.A. Angels

Cambric Moye has been confident in his future as a professional baseball player since his days as a fixture behind the plate at Eastern Wayne.

Moye's belief in his potential was recently confirmed.

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro junior catcher was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday in the 30th round of the Major League Early Entry Baseball Draft. This is the 13th consecutive season the Spartans' have had a player drafted.

"I've known since high school I had a chance to play professionally," Moye said. "I knew I needed to use college to develop my game. A lot of credit goes to (Eastern Wayne head baseball coach) Jabo Fulghum and the tools he taught me. I tried to learn from other catchers and I did my best to develop my skills."

Moye and the Angels have yet to work out the details of a contract or where he'll begin his minor league career.

"It was a long waiting game until I heard my name finally called," Moye said. "The Angels called me about two weeks before the draft to ask me about my signability. Then they called me about two minutes before I was drafted just to confirm."

Moye started 52 of UNCG's 53 games this spring and recorded a .303 batting average. He collected 59 hits, six home runs and 35 RBI. Moye had a .983 fielding percentage and led all Southern Conference catchers by throwing out 19 base runners.

He helped the Spartans lead the conference in batting average for the first time in program history with a .311 mark. Moye tallied 14 multiple-hit games and also earned his first career Southern Conference player-of-the-week award.

"I feel like this past season my consistency as a catcher and my blocking, footwork, framing pitches and communication with the pitching staff all improved," Moye said. "Catching so many games was a learning experience and it taught me a lot about staying healthy and taking care of my body so I can go out every day and catch and see what it feels like to possibly be in the minors."

Moye joins Walker Gourley and John Wooten as members of the 2009 Eastern Wayne squad who were drafted after falling to Lake Norman in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A state championship series.
