Rosewood captures fourth straight Wells Fargo Carolina 1-A Conference Cup

Rosewood easily distanced itself from the pack during a dominating spring sports campaign.

The Eagles claimed regular-season titles in three sports, finished runners-up in two others and secured their fourth consecutive Wells Fargo Class 1-A Conference Cup.

"We are very proud of our athletes and coaches for achieving this honor for the fourth year in a row," RHS athletics director Robert Britt said. "It shows the commitment our athletic program has to work for one another."

The men's golf team logged its third consecutive league crown. The men's tennis and women's outdoor track and field team each earned a conference championship. The women's soccer and softball teams each posted a runner-up finish.

Rosewood compiled 73 points, 14 more than runner-up Goldsboro, which shared the men's regular-season tennis championship. Princeton amassed 57 points after securing spring titles in softball, men's outdoor track and field and women's soccer.

Ayden-Grifton, the runner-up in baseball, took fourth with 44 points. Spring Creek placed fifth with 35.5 points. North Duplin, which won its second baseball championship in the past three seasons, collected 26.5 points.

Triton didn't win a spring championship, but fended off Charles B. Aycock to take the 2012-13 Wells Fargo Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference Cup. The Hawks placed second in baseball and men's outdoor and track, and nipped the Golden Falcons 113.5-112.5 in the final tally.

Aycock emerged the regular-season champion in baseball and seized a share of the softball title with South Johnston. Cleveland, which swept the outdoor track and field championships, ended up third with 104.5 points.

"We did well overall," CBA athletics director Charles Davis said. "(We) made a push in spring sports, but was very pleased with the effort of our coaches and athletes all year."

Eastern Wayne, the men's tennis champion, took fourth with 83.5 points. South Johnston (82 points), Southern Wayne (63.5) and North Lenoir (44.5) rounded out the seven-team field.

Greene Central shared the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference baseball title with North Pitt, and wound up fifth overall in the league's Cup competition.

James Kenan was seventh in the Tri-County 1-A Cup wars.

The Wells Fargo Conference Cup recognizes schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performances within individual conferences among the four classifications in the N.C. High School Athletic Association ranks. Wachovia, and now Wells Fargo, have sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.

In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points.
