DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne routinely put the baseball in play and forced Spring Creek to execute defensively.
Rain ultimately forced both teams to call it a day.
The Saints built an early lead on their way to a 6-2, game one victory in an Eastern Carolina Baseball League doubleheader Thursday afternoon. Game two was rained out and will be rescheduled.
Hunter Barwick's RBI double put Southern Wayne in front in the bottom of the first inning. The lead grew to 2-0 as Barwick later scored on a wild pitch.
Tyler Brock's two-run double in the bottom of the second inning extended the lead to 4-0. Brock later raced home on a wild pitch. Southern Wayne took advantage of six Spring Creek errors.
"We had some pretty good at-bats," SW head coach Jackson Massey said. "We hit some in the gaps and we capitalized on some of their errors and I was proud of how we ran the bases hard. If you put the ball in play you, always give yourself a chance to win."
Josh Jernigan capped Southern Wayne's scoring with an RBI single in the top of the third inning.
Spring Creek pushed across two runs in the top of the fourth inning on Matt Rogers' RBI groundout and Will Rouse's RBI single.
"I told our boys to be aggressive and hit the first good one you see and we started doing that," Spring Creek head coach Allen Nichols said. "If we didn't make so many errors this would have been a tight ballgame."
Matt Holland earned the win on the mound for Southern Wayne.
Weather permitting, Southern Wayne entertains Charles B. Aycock Blue today. Spring Creek visits Aycock White on Tuesday.
