Princeton pounds out win over Saints

PRINCETON -- It was all hands on deck for Princeton on Wednesday night.

Each of the Bulldogs' nine starters recorded at least one hit and Princeton cruised past Southern Wayne 10-3 on the softball diamond.

Coming off a Carolina 1-A Conference win over Goldsboro on Tuesday night, the Bulldogs picked up where they left off against the Saints and grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning.

Haley Wood doubled to start the rally. Danielle Best, Logan Pace and Carson Braswell each followed with a single.

"Tonight was one of those nights where everyone had good at-bats," Princeton head coach Terry Braswell said. "Most importantly we got some timely hits when we had runners in scoring position."

Southern Wayne tied the game in the fourth inning.

Savannah Wiggins reached on an error and moved into scoring position when Haley Warren walked. Hope Rose bounced into a fielder's choice and Aubrey Sasser followed with a single.

Claire Kennedy plated a run with a productive groundout and Morgan Best tied the game with an RBI single.

"Once we got to about the fourth inning we started to hit the ball," Southern Wayne head coach Michael Wiggs said. "The last few games we have started slow and had to play from behind. We need to do a better job of scoring in the first two or three innings and not put ourselves in that position."

Princeton (9-2 overall) grabbed the lead back in the fourth inning with three runs and put the game away in the fifth by batting around.

With the Bulldogs ahead 6-3, Taylor Carroll drilled a double and scored on Tori Paul's single. Wood followed with an RBI double, Best walked and Carson Braswell was hit by a pitch.

Charley Cox plated a run with an RBI base hit and the Bulldogs' final run scored on an error.

The 10-3 lead was more than enough for Paul. The senior allowed one hit over the final three innings during a complete-game performance.

"Tori did a great job of staying around the plate," Braswell said. "She worked both sides of the zone and got some big outs with runners on base."

Princeton travels to Ayden-Grifton tonight, while Southern Wayne (6-8) plays host to Cleveland on Monday.
