Thompson fares well in outdoor meet

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Mount Olive College junior Amber Thompson made her first outdoor track and field meet of the season a big one.

The Trojans' distance runner narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championships after dominating the 3,000-metersteeplechase Saturday at the Coastal Carolina Invitational.

Thompson completed the event in 11 minutes, 15.83 seconds.

MOC's Aerostata Brown recorded top-10 finishes in two jumps -- sixth in the triple jump (10.88 meters) and eighth in the long jump (5.30 meters).

Teammate Jaynell Brown ended up sixth with a school-record toss of 12.12 meters in the shot put. Char'de Washington placed 14th in the same event.

Men's track

CONWAY, S.C. -- Freshman Aki Kitagawa established school records in the 1,500- and 5,000-meter events during the Coastal Carolina University Invitational.

Kitagawa posted a sixth-place time of 15:09.22 in the 5,000. He took 10th overall in the 1,500 with a time of 4:02.63. Eight of nine runners in the event were from Division I schools.

Ronnie Sturgill and Mike Munoz placed ninth and 10th, respectively, in the 5,000. Teammate Scottie Harris captured third place with a mark of 13.53 meters in the triple jump.

Caleb Henderson took seventh in the long jump and was 15th in the 100-meter dash. Lamont Taylor placed 17th in the dash. Jamar Davis grabbed 18th place in the 800-meter run and David Wilson was eighth in the 400 hurdles.

Erasmo Ordonez finished eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Men's lacrosse

MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Eleven players scratched in the scoring column and Mount Olive College rolled past Florida Tech, 19-11, in a non-conference match Saturday evening.

Jake Duarte and Nick Sanderson found the back of the net in a 72-second span in the first period, and gave the Trojans a lead they'd never relinquish.

But early on, the man to stop for Mount Olive was Cameron Walsh. The sophomore assisted on Sanderson's goal, then added a three of his own by the end of the first 15 minutes. Walsh finished with five goals.

Matt Shields and Alex Tindall added goals of their own to give MOC an 8-3 cushion after one period.

Daniel Shields posted three goals and two assists, while his brother, Matt, contributed two goals and three assists. Duarte contributed two goals.

Blake Bennett, Josh Schwartz, Jake Hancock, Alex Tindall, Spencer Gelinas, Curtis McMullen and Nick Sanderson also scored for the Trojans.

Keeper Rocky Bowman logged a season-high 14 saves.

Mount Olive (3-3 overall) travels to Alderson-Broaddus on March 17.
