PEMBROKE -- Lauren Smith tossed her second straight shutout inside the circle and Mount Olive College defeated UNC Pembroke, 3-0, in game two of a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon.
The Braves took the opener, 4-2.
Smith retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh innings to seal the win. She allowed six hits, struck out four and walked one.
Kelsey Akers accounted for all three Trojan runs in her first start of the season.
UNCP snapped MOC's five-game win streak in game one.
The Trojans had the tying run on base with one out in the seventh. Akers reached on an error to lead off the inning and eventually went to third on Danielle Mitchell's single. But UNCP pitcher Starr Gilley retired the next two batters on an infield pop-up and a flyout to left field to end the game.
Trojan starter Carly White (4-2) went the distance, striking out three and walking none.
Mount Olive (10-4 overall) travels to Spartanburg, S.C., for the annual Mid-South Classic this week. The Trojans face Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) and No. 4-ranked North Georgia on Saturday. They take on No. 10-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State (Ga.) and Tusculum (Tenn.) on Sunday.
