Cougar girls hammer Hobbton

At no point during her freshman season has any stage appeared to be too big for Tyona Moses.

Evidently the state playoffs aren't, either.

Moses scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down 15 rebounds in just three quarters of action in Goldsboro's 71-37 win over Hobbton on Monday night in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A girls' basketball playoffs.

The Cougars (18-5) play host to James Kenan on Wednesday.

"I told our girls that we needed to crash the boards and when every shot goes up I want four girls going to the boards," Goldsboro head coach LaTina Bullock said. "They were crashing and we were getting offensive and defensive rebounds and that made a big difference tonight."

Talaya Lassiter knocked down four 3-pointers in the first half as the Cougars built a 44-20 lead by halftime. Lassiter finished with 14 points.

"Talaya was able to move around and get into a rhythm and hit some shots which is something she hasn't been doing over the last couple of games," Bullock said. "We were able to find her and her shot was falling tonight so that was great for us."

Destini Covington and Brandy Johnson each scored 10 points for Goldsboro.

Michaela Wilson led the Wildcats with 16 points and Casey Hobbs had 11.
