Boys' basketball

Trinity-Fayetteville 61,

Wayne Country Day 46

* CHARLOTTE -- Trinity Christian of Fayetteville raced to an 11-point lead after one quarter and held on to defeat Wayne Country Day, 61-46, in quarterfinal-round action of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A playoffs.

Lee Atkinson led the Chargers with 10 points.

"I was extremely proud of our guys and their effort," WCDS head coach Terry Jones said. "We'd discussed the things necessary to win, and one of those things was to be able to keep Trinity, a fast and deep team, within a 50-60-point scoring total. We were able to do that in the end, but I never would have bet we would have had the shooting struggles we did for the entirety of the game.

"We did everything right, got all the shots we wanted ... just wasn't our day."

Seniors Wyatt Bland, Cody Neal and Deshar Thomas played their final game for WCDS, which concluded the season 17-9 overall.

Girls' basketball

Hobgood Academy 43,

Wayne Country Day 35

* CHARLOTTE -- Fourth-seeded Hobgood Academy ousted Wayne Country Day, 43-35, during quarterfinal-round play of the NCISAA 1-A playoffs.

Senior Sarah Best, who earned all-state recognition, led the Chargers with 20 points and six rebounds. Fellow senior Hannah Pearson just missed a double-double with nine points and 15 rebounds.

WCDS finished the year 11-13 overall.

Swimming

Trio compete for WCDS

* RALEIGH -- Seventh-grader Zan Pittman 10th overall in the boys' 500 freestyle event during the season-ending NCISAA 1-A/2-A championship swimming meet.

Pittman touched the wall in 5 minutes, 56.14 seconds. He ended up 14th in the 200 free with a time of 2:15.67.

Junior Robert Glass took 32nd in the 50 free with a time of 27.32. He swam a 42nd-place time of 1:03.05 in the 100 free.

Freshman Kate Thompson logged a time of 1:13.45 in the girls' 100 free.
