Erskine ends Mount Olive's winning streak

DUE WEST, S.C. -- Kendall Hargrove had 14 points and five steals, but Erskine ended Mount Olive's five-game winning streak by rallying for a 74-67Conference Carolinas win on Saturday.
The Trojans (6-8, 3-5 Conference Carolinas) built an eight-point lead at halftime, thanks largely to an 8-2 run late in the period. With the game tied 25-25 with 7:57 to play, Mount Olive forced the Flying Fleet into four missed jumpers and three turnovers during the surge that lasted almost four minutes. Hargrove hit a pair of jumpers and had two steals to get the run started, while Dominique Reed and Darrell Patterson added jumpers.
Mount Olive took a 40-33 lead into the locker room. When the teams returned to the floor, the Trojans threatened to pull away. A three-pointer by Patterson, then a pair of Ewon Wright free throws gave Mount Olive its biggest lead, 49-38, four minutes into the second half.
DeShaun Hall brought the Flying Fleet (9-4, 5-4 CC) back. Hall hit a jumper, then converted a three-point play to swing momentum back to Erskine. Corey Sorrell made three-of-four free throws, then assisted on a three-point play by Mike Gabbard to tie the game 51-51 with 11:09 left.
Erskine tied the game three more times before taking the lead for good on a three-pointer by Jake Haslam with 7:05 to play. Mount Olive got within one point twice down the stretch, the final time coming on a Dory Hines jumper with 5:13 left. The Trojans made just one field goal the rest of the game.
The Trojans shot just 33 percent from the field in the contest, including 25 percent in the second half.
Erskine defeated the Trojans 77-65 Kornegay Arena December 1 behind Corey Sorrell's 23 points. Sorrell matched that total Saturday to lead all scorers.
Patterson was the only other Trojan in double figures, adding 13 points. He has scored at least 10 points in 11 of the past 12 games and eight in a row.
Mount Olive returns home to meet Belmont Abbey Wednesday night.
Lady Trojans rout Flying Fleet
DUE WEST, S.C. -- Kirksten Mitchell and Tamara Nesmith scored 21 points apiece, while Jasmine McDonald sparked the defense with a career-high seven steals as Mount Olive defeated Erskine 66-42 in Conference Carolinas play Saturday afternoon.
McDonald became the latest Trojan to flirt with a triple-double, adding 11 points and nine rebounds.
Mount Olive (11-3, 7-3 Conference Carolinas) jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first 77 seconds of the contest after Alexandra Silva's three-pointer and the Trojans led wire-to-wire. Erskine (0-14, 0-9) got as close as 10-6 on Jana Dixon's basket, but back-to-back field goals by Nesmith highlighted a 9-0 Trojan run and the margin stayed in double digits the remainder of the contest.
The lead surpassed the 20-point mark for the first time after back-to-back three-pointers by Mitchell gave the Trojans a 33-12 advantage with 6:30 left in the first half. Erskine rallied with nine unanswered points as Rosa Powell capped the run with a three-pointer and a pair of free throws to pull the Flying Fleet within 33-21 with 2:39 remaining.
Mitchell and Nesmith each scored 14 points in the first half.
Mount Olive took its biggest lead of the game at 63-32 on Mitchell's basket with 7:27 remaining.
The Trojams begin a three-game homestand Thursday as the Trojans play host to Belmont Abbey in Conference Carolinas action.
