Aycock grapplers knock off Princeton

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock avoided the emotional letdown and rolled past Princeton, 56-18, on Thursday evening.

The Golden Falcons, who defeated archrival Eastern Wayne just 24 hours earlier, prevailed in nine of 13 contested individual matches in the non-conference affair.

Aycock crossed the 200-pin plateau as a team.

Second-year starter Zack Howard (106 pounds) and senior 160-pounder Khaleil Owens extended their respective win streaks to 27 and 21 matches. Owens pinned an opponent for the 20th time this season.

Heavyweight Matt Teachey, first-year starter Jacob Dickenson (120 pounds), Jaquan Walker (145), Broc Doyle (170) and Landon Moore (220) each pinned their respective opponent. Jordan Bailey pulled out a 4-2 overtime decision at 126 pounds.

Ryan Morton (195) received the Golden Falcons' lone forfeit.

Princeton got wins from Martin Bayles (113), Holden Holt (138), Cody Parrish (152) and 182-pounder Brent Odham.

C.B. Aycock (23-4 overall) travels to Triton on Jan. 23.

Golf

Two Simmons selected

* Charles B. Aycock senior Tara Simmons and younger brother Wesley have been selected to represent North Carolina during the Carolinas-Georgia Junior Golf Invitational at Mt. Vintage Golf Course in North Augusta, S.C.

The two-day, 36-hole event is Jan. 20-21.

Tara won her second straight N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A women's golf championship last October, while Wesley -- a freshman -- helped lead APA to the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 2-A men's golf crown.

Tara is making her fourth appearance in the Invitational.

The winner gains full exemption into American Junior Golf Association tournaments.

Summerlin notches ace

* John Summerlin recorded his second hole-in-one while playing a round at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course.

Summerlin aced No. 16 using a 5-iron from the white tees.

Billy Goff, Dave Bargoli, Dick Read and Lee Summerlin witnessed the feat.

Middle schools

* Girls' basketball: Wayne Christian 36, Community Christian 24 -- Kasey Norris led Wayne Christian with 18 points and Georgia Parnell had eight.
