Girls' basketball

Rosewood 51, C.B. Aycock 39

* PIKEVILLE -- Rosewood jumped out to an early lead and never looked back against Charles B. Aycock on Wednesday night.

The Eagles opened up a 13-6 advantage in the first quarter and maintained it until the intermission on the strength of 13 first-half points from Lexi Mercer.

When Mercer got in four trouble in the second half, Alicia Burns took over the scoring role for the Eagles. Burns tallied 16 of her game-high 22 points in the second half.

"That's the nice thing about this team is that we don't have to rely on one person to do all the scoring," Rosewood head coach Ryan Wells said. "We have a lot of girls that can shoot the ball and I think we are starting to gel on the offensive end a little bit."

Mercer added 18 points in the win.

Myleah Jones led C.B. Aycock with 13 points. Taylor Daniels added 11 points in the defeat.

C.B. Aycock (2-5 overall) plays host to Nash Central on Friday. Rosewood (2-3) is the guest of Midway on Monday.

Eastern Wayne 59, Hunt 56, OT

* Eastern Wayne prevailed in overtime for the second consecutive night with a 59-56, non-conference win over Wilson Hunt on Wednesday evening.

Hunt outscored Eastern Wayne 20-4 in the fourth quarter to force overtime before Shontel Monk's ball pressure began creating problems for the visiting Warriors. Nijah Muhammad's steal and assist to Monk led to a layup and Eastern Wayne went 5 for 9 from the free throw line in overtime.

Apriann Sutton led Eastern Wayne with 13 points and Tamiya Dortch added 10 points. Muhammad and Monk both scored seven points and Jasmine Covington added seven points.

Eastern Wayne (5-0) begins Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Dec. 11 at Cleveland.

Princeton 44, Hobbton 33

* NEWTON GROVE -- Savanna Massengill poured in 23 points and pulled down nine rebounds in Princeton's 44-33, non-conference win Wednesday evening at Hobbton.

The Bulldogs built a 30-18 lead by the end of the third quarter and the Wildcats were unable to close the gap. Charley Cox contributed 11 points, five steals and three assists. Hailey Wood had four points and 10 rebounds.

Princeton (2-2 overall) plays host to North Johnston on Friday.

Lee Christian 44, Wayne Christian 21

* Brooke Barfield collected a team-leading eight points in Wayne Christian's 44-21 loss to Lee Christian on Tuesday evening.

Barfield, a senior, pulled down three rebounds and recorded two steals. Kelsey Kornegay supplied five points and nine rebounds. Katie Isenhower chipped in four points and five rebounds.

Kaylee Wallace registered four points and nine rebounds.

The Eagles travel to Cape Fear Christian on Friday.

Boys' basketball

Jones Senior 83, Greene Central 78

* TRENTON -- Greene Central saw a 12-point lead evaporate in the fourth quarter as Jones Senior rallied for an 83-78, non-conference win on Wednesday night.

The Trojans outscored the Rams 31-14 during the final eight minutes.

Tevin Bates scored 21 points for the Rams and Brandon Belcher provided 16 points. Jalyn Harper supplied 11 points and Sae Wooten had 10.

Jones Senior's Miguel Foy finished with a game-high 29 points.

Princeton 49, Hobbton 40

* NEWTON GROVE -- Princeton improved to 3-1 with a 49-40, non-conference win Wednesday night at Hobbton.

The Bulldogs held a 30-29 lead after three quarters and hung on for the win behind 15 points from Michael Wooten. Ryne Woodard provided 13 points and Nick Cobb had nine. Colby Norris added six points.

Princeton (3-1 overall) plays host to North Johnston on Friday.

Spring Creek 51, Lejeune 50

* JACKSONVILLE -- Tre Hammonds converted the game-winning layup as time expired and Spring Creek upended Lejeune, 51-50, on Tuesday evening.

The Gators, who trailed by 18 points in the opening half, trimmed the deficit to five by intermission. The Devilpups held a five-point advantage with 45 seconds left in regulation, but couldn't handle the Spring Creek defense.

With 9.5 seconds to go, Lejeune missed the front end of 1-and-1 opportunity. Chad Spurgeon rebounded and dished off to Hammonds, who capped the comeback.

Spurgeon paced the Gators with a double-double -- 13 points, 10 rebounds. Hammonds added 13 points and handed out four assists. Justin Cianfarra contributed 10 points, three rebounds and two blocked shots.

Spring Creek visits South Lenoir on Dec. 11.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: C.B. Aycock 39, Rosewood 17 -- T.J. Morrow led the Golden Falcons with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Bryce Jordan finished with nine points and eight rebounds. Aycock (4-3 overall) entertains Nash Central on Friday.
