Chad Davis hasn't lost his stroke.

The reigning Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference male swimmer-of-the-year, Davis returned to the Family Y pool Tuesday evening and posted two eastern regional-qualifying times in season-opening action.

Davis, a senior at Southern Wayne, churned through the water in a meet-winning time of 1:57.5 seconds in the 200-yard freestyle. He added the 500 free to his regional card with a first-place effort of 5:33.3.

Goldsboro's tandem of Logan Cole and Zach Darden each emerged victorious in two events and easily eclipsed standard qualifying marks for the N.C. High School Athletic Association Classes 1-A/2-A regional.

Cole touched the wall first in the 100 butterfly (55.6 seconds) and 100 backstroke (57.24). Darden claimed the 200 individual medley in 2:12.67 and 100 free in 51.46.

Darden swam the opening lap on the Cougars' 400 free relay, which logged a regional-qualifying time of 4:00.9. Sophomore Victor Prezbindowski handled the second lap, Vincent Spagnuolo took the third lap and Cole shouldered the anchor duties.

The Cougars also won the 200 medley relay in regional-qualifying fashion. Christian Martens swam the final leg behind Darden, Prezbindowski and Cole. The quartet recorded a time of 1:55.56.

Goldsboro won the team event 98-88 over Eastern Wayne.

Charles B. Aycock's Sam Chastain captured the 50 free in 24.82, while teammate Devin Hall secured the top spot in 1-meter diving with 169.7 points. Hall is the two-time defending NCHSAA 3-A state champion.

Eastern Wayne's Henry Joseph finished runner-up in the 100 free. Fellow Warrior Greg Moorehead placed second in the 100 breaststroke and 200 free.

Southern Wayne's Austin Edgecomb was second in the 500 free.
