Goldsboro scored 18 consecutive points in the second quarter to break open a close game in a season-opening, 66-23 win over visiting Rocky Mount Prep on Tuesday evening.

The Cougars turned up their defensive pressure in the second quarter and began converting Jaguars' turnovers into points. Rocky Mount Prep tied the game at 9-9 on Jasmine Sharpe's layup before Goldsboro went on an 18-0 run to take a 27-9 lead.

"I think we just had to get that feeling of playing our first official game together," Cougars' head coach LaTina Bullock said. "We had a slow start at the beginning. I think we just kind of picked it up very well."

Talaya Lassiter and freshman Tyrona Moses each scored 14 points. Destini Covington added 11 points.

"Talaya was on tonight," Bullock said. "Tonight was a night her shot fell for her and it really helped us a lot. Tyora is going to be very important even though she's only a freshman. Her talent and the skills that she has she can lift us up in times when we may be struggling because she can play inside and out."

Goldsboro (1-0 overall) outscored Rocky Mount Prep 57-16 over the final three quarters.

The Cougars visit Wilson Hunt on Friday.
