Preps digest: Chargers dominate Oakwood, 8-1, in tennis

Girls' tennis

Wayne Country Day 8, Oakwood 1

* Wayne Country Day earned the necessary points in singles and rolled past The Oakwood School, 8-1, in a Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference match contested at Wayne Community College.

Sarah Best, Meredith Roethling, Abbey Pope, Margaux Pope and Anna Allen each emerged victorious in singles play. Best-A. Pope, Roethling-M. Pope and Eliza Eagles-Aimee Barnes led the Chargers to a sweep in doubles play.

Wayne Country Day (10-2 overall) returns home Monday against CPIC archrival Greenfield. Seniors Best and Abbey Pope will be recognized before the match begins.

Spring Creek 5, North Duplin 4

* SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek triumphed on two doubles courts to defeat North Duplin 5-4 and seize a spot in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A dual-team playoffs.

The Gators travel to an undetermined opponent Tuesday.

Senior Emily Daniel improved to 11-0 with an 8-4 triumph over North Duplin freshman Julisa Quintanilla. It was a rematch of the Carolina 1-A Conference singles title match also won by Daniel.

Second-seeded Anna Haggerty climbed to 11-1 with an 8-6 decision over the Rebels' Jasmin Quintanilla. Quintanilla defeated Haggerty 24 hours earlier for a berth in the NCHSAA eastern regional individual tournament, which begins Oct. 19 at Herman Park.

Magen Jones added a win at No. 6 singles for Spring Creek.

The tandems of Daniel-Haggerty and Madelyn Coates-Cassidy Goff picked up the crucial doubles points.

North Duplin received individual points from Casey Thornton, Casey Whitted and Delaney LoAlbo. Jasmin Quintanilla-Thornton combined for the win at No. 2 doubles.

Volleyball

Spring Creek 3, North Duplin 0

* Rachel McCullom pounded out six kills and served three aces in Spring Creek's 25-11, 25-8, 25-13 victory over Carolina 1-A Conference rival North Duplin.

The Gators (8-8 overall, 5-5 CC) and Rebels will meet in quarterfinal-round play of the season-ending conference tournament Monday at Ayden-Grifton. The winner travels to regular-season champ Princeton on Tuesday.

Sarah Ford passed out 12 assists and had five aces. Grecia Aguire (three aces), Dianna Correna, Daysi Martinez (four kills) and Ashton Ross (one kill) contributed to the three-set win.

Boys' soccer

Epiphany 3, Wayne Country 2

* NEW BERN -- Wayne Country concluded regular-season play with a 3-2 loss at Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference foe Epiphany on Friday afternoon.

Cody Neal and Ramel Carpenter each scored a goal for the Chargers. Neal also provided an assist.

"The lads gave everything tonight, couldn't have asked for more," WCDS head coach Steve Ellis said. "A couple of bounces our way and a bit of luck, the score would have been reversed. (It was a) good game to finish the regular season and we are looking forward to the playoffs."

The Chargers (7-7-1, 3-5-0) will learn their postseason fate when the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A pairings are announced later this week.

* Boys' soccer: Epiphany 6, Wayne Country Day 0 -- Wayne Country Day was shut out in a 6-0, season-ending loss on Friday at Epiphany.

* Volleyball Spring Creek d. North Duplin 25-21, 25-22 -- Lexie Reyes handed out seven assists. Naomi Valdovinos (two aces, two assists), Alisha Gordan (two aces, two kills), Veronica Martinez (two aces) and Brittany Patterson (one kill) contributed to the season-ending victory.

Youth sports

Neuse River Football League

8-Under

* Goldsboro 27, Mount Olive 0 -- Trenton Elliot paced the rushing attack with 103 yards on touchdown runs of 50 and 53 yards, and hauled in a 20-yard TD pass. Quarterback Jaydon Young accounted for 70 yards and one TD offense, and emerged the defensive leader with 11 tackles. Trey Barnes recorded six tackles for Goldsboro, which remained unbeaten in five outings this season.
