Keaton scores, MOC ties Montevallo (Ala.)

AIKEN, S.C. -- Kelly Keaton's first goal of the season gave Mount Olive an early lead and the Trojans battled regionally fourth-ranked Montevallo (Ala.) to a 1-1 double overtime tie Sunday afternoon.

The result marked the fourth time a Mount Olive men's soccer team has either tied or beaten a nationally-ranked team. Montevallo received votes in this week's NSCAA Top 25 and was the 28th highest vote-getter.

Keaton, who had recorded assists in two of the Trojans' last three games, found the back of the net just 10 minutes, 27 seconds into the match. Keaton took a service from Alex Rodriguez and beat the Montevallo keeper to the lower left corner of the goal to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead. The assist was Rodriguez's second of the season.

The Trojans (3-8-2 overall) held the advantage until the Falcons (9-3-2) delivered the equalizer in the 31st minute when Shane Howard blasted a rebound attempt into the net following a shot by Ryuhei Nose was turned away by Trojan keeper Nick Bernsdorf.

Neither team mustered much of an attack in the extra sessions.

In the first overtime, Mount Olive's Craig Allan had the only attempt by either team. His shot was deflected away. In the second overtime, Bernsdorf came up with a save on an attempt by Pedro Carneiro four minutes in, then a shot by Roussin Nkoy was blocked.

Rodriguez attempted the only shot by the Trojans, but his attempt was blocked with nine seconds remaining.

Bernsdorf finished with six saves for Mount Olive.

MOC entertains in-state foe Catawba on Wednesday. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Amon Field.

Women's soccer

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College honored its six women's soccer seniors Saturday night at Amon Field against Converse (S.C.) College, but three freshmen -- Ellie Barnes, Daisy Thomas and Carolin Edenhofner -- clinched a 1-0 Conference Carolinas overtime win at Amon Field.

Edenhofner recorded her third consecutive shutout and fourth of the season as the Trojans (5-7-1 overall, 4-4 CC) climbed back to .500 in conference play.

Barnes and Thomas delivered the only goal of the match in the 97th minute. Sophomore Damilia Brooks chipped the ball into the box where Thomas was able to squeeze between two Valkyrie defenders for the last of her team's five attempts in the extra period. Her off-balance attempt was re-directed by Barnes off the Converse goalkeeper for the winner.

It was Barnes' fourth goal of the season, and spoiled a spirited performance by Converse keeper Alyssa Schmitt, who was bombarded by 22 shot attempts by the Trojans.

Seniors Mary Knepp, Jen Floyd, Tia Rose, Sarah Dodson, Janaya Finney, Clarke and student assistant coach Devon Lucal and their families were honored for their dedication and commitment to the Mount Olive women's soccer program.
