Warriors sweep ECC cross country meet at So. Wayne

DUDLEY -- Eastern Wayne swept both the boys' and girls' portions of an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tri-meet at Southern Wayne.

On the boys' side, the Warriors compiled 27 points to finish ahead of second-place Charles B. Aycock, which scored 29 points. Southern Wayne had 76 points.

The Golden Falcons' Jerry Huffman was the top male run with a time of 18 minutes, 48 seconds. Marvin Alexander finished second in 18:49.

Eastern Wayne's Tim Cooper (19:39), Andrew Lockerby (19:42), Sawyer Thompson (19:43) and Jeremy Murray (19:44) finished in third through sixth place, respectively.

Wesley Smith (21:01) was the Saints' top runner with a 10th-place finish.

In the girls' race, the Warriors had five of the top six runners and tallied 19 points. Aycock recorded 52 points and Southern Wayne had 65.

Eastern Wayne's Alyssa Akers was the top female runner with a time of 22:51. The Saints' Mollianne Kennedy was second in 23:02. The Warriors' Moran Exum (23:48) was fourth ahead of teammates Cristella Rochlle (23:51), Ashley Arnes (24:27) and Tricia Malcolm (24:26).

Sabrina Johnson was the Golden Falcons' top female runner with a seventh-place finish in 25:07. Cady Sheeks finished in ninth place in 25.30. Southern Wayne's Justine Pfeifer crossed the line in 13th place with a time of 27:31.

The ECC championship meet is Oct. 17 at South Johnston.
