* WARSAW -- James Kenan kept to its winning ways in a 40-20 win over Tri-County Athletic Conference rival Pender on Friday night.

Dominque Barnes got the Tigers on the board with a one-yard run in the first quarter. James Kenan enjoyed a big second quarter when Marcelias Sutton broke free for a 30-yard touchdown run. Following a Pender scoring drive, Sutton returned the kickoff 76 yards to pay dirt. Barnes put the Tigers ahead 27-14 at the intermission with a 16-yard scoring pass to T.J. Fullwood.

"Pender is a big physical team and we knew we would have to make some plays on the perimeter in order to win," James Kenan head coach Ken Avent Jr. said. "I think in the second half we were able to keep (Pender) on the field and maybe get them a little bit worn down which certainly benefitted us."

The second half was all James Kenan as Barnes and Fullwood hooked up again for a second scoring strike. Sutton added another ruching touchdown to cap the scoring.

Sutton finished with 133 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Barnes completed four passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns.

James Kenan (6-0 overall, 3-0 TCC) plays host to Lakewood next week.

Cleveland 53, Southern Wayne 26

* CLAYTON -- Southern Wayne moved the ball effectively but failed to get the necessary defensive stops in a 53-26 loss to Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opponent Cleveland on Friday night.

Andrew Matthews got the Saints on the scoreboard with a 61-yard scoring scamper in the second quarter. Matthews added an 84-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter and finished with 213 total yards on 15 carries.

Jacob Hollingsworth completed three passes for 26 yards and two touchdowns. Matthew Holland and Tony Fields each hauled in one scoring grab.

"After a couple of weeks of struggling to move the football I thought we had our best game of the year offensively," Southern Wayne head coach David Lee said. "My assistant coaches did a great job preparing the kids this week."

Southern Wayne (1-5 overall, 0-2 ECC) entertains Eastern Wayne next week.

Tarboro 48, Greene Central 16

* SNOW HILL -- Tarboro jumped out to a three-touchdown lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter and never looked back in a 48-16 win over Greene Central on Friday night.

The defending 2-A state champions remained undefeated at 6-0 overall.

Austin Batchelor led Greene Central with 198 yards through the air and one passing touchdown, a 19-yard strike to Michael Mitchell, in the fourth quarter.

Kurtis Braswell led the Rams in rushing with 50 yards on 10 carries and one score. Ronshon Bullock added 49 yards on 12 totes.

Greene Central (1-6 overall, 0-3 EPC) has a bye next Friday. The Rams play host to Kinston on Oct. 12.

Ayden-Grifton 55, Rosewood 13

* Defending Carolina 1-A Conference champion Ayden-Grifton opened up defense of its league title with a 55-13 win over Rosewood on Friday night.

Ayden-Grifton outgained Rosewood 432-138 on the night.

Rodney Nelson led the Chargers' rushing offense with 110 yards on 11 carries and one touchdown. Tyree Blount finished with 109 yards and a score. Brandon Larry added 67 yards on eight totes and three touchdowns.

Josh Davis paced Rosewood with 125 yards on 18 carries and one touchdown. Davis added a return touchdown in the second half to complete the Eagles' tally. Jacob Sasser completed two passes for 26 yards on the night.

Rosewood (1-5 overall, 0-1 CC) is the guest of Goldsboro next week.

Triton 54, North Lenoir 13

* ERWIN -- Triton remained unbeaten in Eastern Caorlina 3-A Conference play with a 54-13 win over North Lenoir on Friday night.

North Lenoir (1-6 overall, 0-3 ECC) entertains South Johnston next week.
