PIKEVILLE -- For 70 minutes Rosewood and Charles B. Aycock played tactical, defensive, boring soccer.

The final 10 minutes proved to be a free-for-all.

C.B. Aycock scored two late goals and held off Rosewood 2-1 on Thursday night at Hardy Talton Stadium. The Golden Falcons avenged a loss to the Eagles earlier this season.

"It was like watching paint dry for most of the game," C.B. Aycock assistant coach Byron Adkins said. "Then we got a break on a deflection and the game really opened up for the final 10 minutes."

The first half was a back-and-forth affair as each team misfired on limited scoring chances. C.B. Aycock's Bailey Lynch had the best chance of the opening half, but his one-on-one shot was saved by Rosewood keeper Daniel Herring.

The second half was more physical than the first, but featured even less action. Lynch took a throw-in deep in the Rosewood end in the 70th minute and fired the ball into the 18-yard box. A clearing attempt by the Eagles deflected off of C.B. Aycock defender Tim Naughton and into the net.

"I told Daniel (Mitchell) at the half that it was going to come down to some weird play," Rosewood head coach Eddie Maldonado said. "The first goal we allowed, we played the ball out and it hit one of their kids in the knee and bounced in."

C.B. Aycock made the score 2-0 in the 74th minute when Juan Pina fired a shot past the diving keeper.

Rosewood made things interesting in the 76th minute when Thanh Truong collected a Golden Falcon turnover and got the Eagles on the board with a bending shot.

The C.B. Aycock defense regrouped and played out the final four minutes without incident.

"Rosewood has a good team, they have proven that," Adkins said. "Their kids play hard and they stick to what they do well and that leads to some interesting matchups."

C.B. Aycock (4-3-2 overall) travels to Southern Wayne on Monday night, Rosewood (6-4-0) opens Carolina 1-A Conference play at home against Goldsboro the same evening.
