MOUNT OLIVE -- Former Mount Olive College standout Carter Capps has been named a first-team All-Star by Baseball America.

Capps set almost every MOC pitching record before heading to the minors after his junior season. The Lenoir County resident was called up to the Seattle Mariners less than a month ago, and is enjoying a stellar campaign in the "Big Show."

A pitcher turned catcher, Capps is the lone relief pitcher selected to the first team after going 2-3 with 19 saves and a 1.29 earned run average. In 39 relief appearances between Double-A Jackson and Triple-A Tacoma, he permitted just seven earned runs in 51.3 innings. Capps averaged 13.2 strikeouts and 2.1 walks per nine innings.

Capps converted 19 of 21 save opportunities, holding opponents to a .212 batting average in the process. Seattle called up Capps on July 31 and he made his Major League debut Aug. 3 against the New York Yankees.
