Richardson runs rampant for Lejeune

Jamaz Richardson played one of the best games in the state this season on Friday night.

Unfortunately for Rosewood, Richardson is the starting tailback for Lejeune. Richardson tallied 400 yards of total offense by himself and the Devilpups rallied for a 41-15 win at Branch Pope Field.

"We did not do a good job of tackling tonight and we need to get better at that," Rosewood head coach Robert Britt said. "When you play a good team with a great tailback you can not allow big plays and tonight we gave up too many."

The game started poorly for the Eagles (1-4 overall) when a fumble on the second play from scrimmage set up Richardson's first touchdown, a 33-yard scamper.

Rosewood answered the call late in the first when Josh Davis broke free for a 16-yard touchdown. A two-point conversion pass from Jacob Sasser to Davis put the Eagles ahead 8-7.

Davis made it 15-7 just before the halftime break with a 70-yard scoring scamper.

"Offensively we moved the ball all night," Britt said. "We had three turnovers and two killer penalties that ended drives, and we are not good enough to make mistakes like that and beat a Lejeune team."

The second half belonged to Richardson and the Devilpups.

Richardson took the second hand-off of the third quarter and raced 62 yards to paydirt. After a Rosewood drive stalled, the Pups took over and Richardson made another big play when he hauled n a 62-yard touchdown pass that gave Lejeune a 21-15 lead.

On the next Lejeune possession, Richardson broke free for a 54-yard scoring run. It was the junior's third touchdown in 10 minutes of game action. Richardson capped his night with an eight-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter that put the game away with Lejeune ahead 34-15.

Malcolm Hunter scored a final touchdown to cap the Devilpups tally.

Lejeune finished with 484 yards of total offense. Richardson finished with 338 rushing and 62 receiving.

Davis led Rosewood with 158 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns. Spencer Garrison added 89 yards on 15 totes and Jamari McGowan tallied 58 yards on eight carries. Sasser completed six passes for 60 yards.

"We have to learn from tonight and use it over the next week at practice," Britt said. "We have to focus on getting better each day because that is what will lead to results on Friday nights."

Rosewood (1-4 overall) has a bye week before traveling to defending eastern 1-A champion Ayden-Grifton on Sept. 28.
