Girls' tennis

Wayne Christian goes 2-0

* WILSON -- Wayne Christian swept the singles and doubles courts during a 9-0 triumph over Oakwood during day two of the third annual Alice Cobb Memorial Tennis Classic contested at Barton College.

The Eagles defeated Lawrence Academy, 8-1, on Friday.

Senior and top-seeded Brooke Barfield, Taylor Willman, Elizabeth Sutton, Ally Willman, Abigail Easom and Carla Benton each picked up a straight-set win against Oakwood. Benton did not lose a game at No. 6 singles.

Barfield-T. Willman, Sutton-A. Willman and Easom-Benton completed the shutout win in doubles play.

Against Lawrence, Barfield, Taylor Willman, Sutton, Ally Willman and Benton each earned a straight-set singles win.

Barfield-T. Willman, Sutton-A. Willman and Abigail Easom-Benton each triumphed in doubles.

Weather permitting, Wayne Christian (4-1 overall) plays host to county archrival Wayne Country Day on Monday. First serve is 4 p.m. at Wayne Community College.

Boys' soccer

Wayne Christian 4, Northwood 2

* FAYETTEVILLE -- Dylan Smith notched the game-winning goal in the second half and Wayne Christian doubled up Northwood Temple, 4-2, in a Carolina Christian 1-A Conference battle Friday afternoon.

The Eagles' Austin Howell broke the scoreless tie 45 seconds into the game on an assist from Baron Wise. Northwood responded with two goals and led 2-1 at the break.

Wayne Christian answered in dominating fashion in the second half.

Howell scored on a two-touch pass from Chandler Gentry to Easom to forge a 2-2 deadlock. Smith scored on a cross from Easom and Howell capped the second-half surge off yet another assist by Easom.

WCS goalie Mason White tallied nine saves, while Connor Jones added a non-goalie save.

The Eagles (3-3-0 overall, 3-2-0 CCC) entertain league foe Cresset on Tuesday. Kickoff is 5 p.m.

Volleyball

Wayne Christian 3, Northwood Temple 1

* FAYETTEVILLE -- Katie Caviness and Katie Isenhower each flirted with a triple-double, and Wayne Christian bounced back from an opening-set loss to defeat Northwood Temple 16-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-14 on Friday evening.

Caviness supplied 10 service aces, eight kills and assists for the Eagles, who rose to 3-4 overall and 3-2 against Carolina Christian 1-A Conference opposition this season. Isenhower delivered 10 aces, nine kills and nine assists.

Kelsey Kornegay chipped in seven kills and two blocks. Kaylee Wallace (six kills) and libero Reagan Taylor (seven digs) contributed to the four-set win. Morgan Foss and Jennifer Potts combined for eight digs on defense.

Wayne Christian entertains defending CCC tournament champion Cresset on Tuesday. First serve is 5 p.m. at Clifford Gymnatorium.
